It brought everything together which was missing with the Sig. 70s alone.  Lockdown as in, not looking for anything at the moment and don't know what it would be even if I was.

I didn't say I'd never buy any new audio gear.

doug - Not a drop of DIY in my entire body. I will not even think about a cabinet swap. Besides there is much more involved than just that.

The KT 917 should fetch $650 or $700 I guess. I'm sure you watch these things closer than I do. Wanna see a picture?

Mike - I might try a tubed preamp but for some reason I am not comfortable with putting a lot into one. Phil Ressler suggested the SP-6B as a good option for me some time ago and I think they can be had for around $600 to $700. With what it takes to resell things these days, I'm not eager to flip gear anymore.

I wholly recommend the Lamm LL2 Deluxe, though it doesn't have a phono stage or remote.  Tvad gave me this recommendation and it's an unequivocal winner.  They can be had on Agon for under $3k.  It's still a current model and they sell fairly briskly, which should limit your lemon exposure.

Ahem!!

Now, where was I? Ah, yes, the Def Pros are still for sale and the price is $6850 firm. That may say something. Whenever I see the word FIRM in an audio ad, I always just keep on moving because I take it to mean he doesn't want to part with the damn thing.

In my case, that is not true. I am willing to sell but I'm not interested in debate about what they're worth. I just told you what they are worth. If competition heats up between me and the other Def Pro sellers, I'll have a decision to make about lowering the price but insofar as most people are advising me to keep them anyway, I think I'll just manipulate the marketplace like any monopolistic supplier would do.

Something that I know, which seems to escape the attention of many of you, is that these speakers do not have parallel competition. Everything at their price point is disappointingly inferior and everything that approaches their performance level is staggeringly expensive. See ----- I'm done pandering. No reason to be humble anymore. Mike Smith is right, of course. The difference between these and what I would buy to replace them consists primarily of ego.

Boy!! That felt good.

As for preamps, is the modern wowser stuff like Lamm that much better than something more venerable and less expensive? I need at least 4 inputs, insist on inboard phono, and would like remote control.
Dead silent and highly resolving are important because of the speakers I use and explosive dynamics are essential. Anybody have something to sell? Or better yet trade? I've got entirely too many things that plug in the wall around here. And I really don't know my ass from my elbow about tubes.

For less money, you can get the new GR Research LS-6 or LS-9

Tvad - Good call. I looked up the Lamm site. Very impressive stuff but not for me. I'm pretty sure I don't want tubes despite the respect I have for Mike's opinions and recommendations.

At this point in my life I'm aiming toward simplification. That was part of the reason for wanting to go to Def 2s. I liked the option of bi-amping or using the internal amp. Chances are I would be content to keep it simple. If not, I can return to what I have now by bringing the Crown back in.

I guess I've been as close to the mountain as I need to get in terms of performance. Henceforth, I'm quite willing to compromise.

I may even downgrade to the Zu Presence when that comes along.

don't take the bait - don't take the bait - don't take the bait - he's a moron - don't take the bait.....
does this mean the speakers aren't any good?     i have heard other gr-research designs, & i think they are quite nice.  i would love to hear a pair of the ls-9's; i suspect they are killer speakers at any price, & a steal at the $4k list price...

re: your kt917, it seems your price is about right.  i am not really in a position to pay "about right" prices for a relatively spendy tuna right now; i was thinking i might be willing to splurge for a bargain, tho.     if you're really wanting to sell, lemme know & i will post to the yahoo tuna forum about it, if you want...

re: preamps, if i were wanting to spend ~$1k for a preamp, i would wait until i found a mint modded melos sha gold-r.  extremely clsoe to the ma333r, & a fantastic pre in its own right, imo.  it has a lot of inputs (6, i think), it has about the best headfone amp ever made, it has active/passive capability, & it's got remote wolume/balance...  if you, (or anyone else, for that matter), want a simple wersion of this preamp - only 2 inputs, & no remote, scarf up the dodd audio preamp presently listed f/s on agon - it is based on the melos preamp.  a bargain at $400, imo.  (even tho it's asking price is 80% of retail.   :green:  ):

if you want a good inexpensive tubed preamp w/only two inputs, but remote control, i have heard many rave comments, (some, from folks whose ears i trust), about the dared sl2000.  one bud of mine said it outperformed the well-regarded vtl tl5.5, which retailed for $3500. one is on agon right now.  oops - awreddy sold:

but, fear not - these can be bought brand-new for <$500:

i'm pretty sure that if you tried a quality tubed preamp in your system, you would never do without one!   :green:  you could try one of the two i mention above, for cheap, to see what you think, & re-sell w/o taking a bath, if you decide that either tubes aren't for you, or that they are for you, & you want something more full-featured...

what is the zu presence?  is this the wersion of the definition w/o the built-in subs?  ie: a druid w/two full-range drivers in an m-t-m configuration, that i was hoping zu would release before they decided to release the tone 1st/instead?

If you lived within 2 hours of me I would drive to your house just to let you listen to my tube preamp,
I love :inlove: my Mapletree Ultra 4 se, not saying it is the greatest out there, but for the money it has a really great sound and I think you might change your mind about tube preamps. :inlove:
I think they are the way to go. I have heard this preamp paired with lots of different amps and it just always works. Again if you were local, it would be my pleasure, no my quest.
My little contribution to this almighty thread, it is damn near biblical.

Boy, doug, you pack a lot into one post.

I don't need to sell the tuner but it's nice to know I can get the price right on something.

I have no idea what those speakers are and I may owe that man an apology. I'm rather battle fatigued at this point and I guess I may have felt a taunt where there was none.

As for preamps -- I thought I had a good idea of what I wanted to do before the glass chorus started up and I have to take your comments seriously because I know you guys are on the level.

I think Tvad misunderstood my ignorance for a cavalier disrespect. I don't really know much about Lamm but I seem to recall it was on the Harry Pearson worship list a number of years ago. Wowser.

I got tired of reading about audio for fun long ago and now will only read a review if I'm in hot pursuit of something, which seldom occurs. In short, I am not up to speed on what's hot and what's not.

I'll let the tube idea simmer for a bit. Then I'll make a plan. Then I'll line up funds and make the necessary overtures and then my speakers will sell when I've completely forgotten that I was trying to sell them. The watched pot never boils. Then all those plans will go to the back burner for protracted simmering.

The Zu Presence is still a rumor but I gather it is going to be a total rework of the Druid cabinet and will include a Mini Method sub in each.

Topround - I'm in Fruita, Colorado. There are no audiophiles within 2 hours of me AFAIK. Thanks for the sentiment though. Another member has offered to ship me a megabuck tube pre to try but I would be scared to scratch it.

I feel like I've lost my bearings.........or maybe my marbles.

gary dodd insists his cheapie pre that's presently f/s on agon is better than the melos pre's - i'd definitely buy it, (mebbe even for less than his asking price?  but i doubt the seller will come off it much - the outboard p/s is rare for that piece.),  if i were in your shoes - it should be an easy re-sell, when you want one more full-featured...   aa and, hell, even if you gave it away, you couldn't lose more than $400!
