Karen Carpenter - by a super long shot.

Louis Armstrong - for obvious reasons.

Layne Staley - another original and irreplaceable great voice.

Freddie Mercury - ditto

Johnny Cash - just got better and better with age.

i love jerry.  one of the all-time folk-rock greats, imo.  but, i do not think his demise shortened his work.  which is why i picked zappa, george, & hendrix.  in the same vein, i would have to agree w/srv, holly, buckley, mozart, bizet...  tho i freely admit i don't like opera even a little bit...   :lol:

so, considering i was only supposed to pick one, i will stick w/my three.   :wink:

And I love Jerry too. and want to have his dig up his bones, scrape off some bone genes, love child!
Id pick Kurt Cobain. I think he had a lot left in him, sans that evil whore, excuse my french, Courtney Love.

Wow. Some really great names here. Many I wouldn't have thought of. Even a few I hadn't heard of. No hard and fast rules on there being "just one" (we are, after all, in the Land of Make Believe here). I just figured it might force you to think a little harder and make a stronger case for one particular person. Hard to make choices, I know. I stand by SRV, but only because it was a deeply felt event. I probably would have picked Buddy Holly had I been born a few decades earlier.

Ooh Ooh Can I say Bob too. He defined a genre, made the greatest music in that genre and no one ever surpassed his original ideas.

My choice would have to be Robert Johnson.The mythology that surrounds this seminal music figure is enormous.With just more than a handful of recordings and one photograph this musician made a profound impression on generations of musicians.He could tell us if the legend of his early death is true...poisoned by a jealous woman.

Brian Jones did actually die ...
though at the time of his death he had already been kicked out of the band .

IMO he was the most talented of the Stones , their greatest records were when he was in the band .
