Well my Audiogon ad has over 1700 hits in 20 days and no offers. I have to conclude that the Defs are not well known enough to attract a buyer because god knows they are speaker enough to improve anybody's system. It's a lot of money, of course, but audiophiles peel off this many skins everyday for other products. The Defs are not formally endorsed by any paid reviewers or glossy audio pinup publications that I know about, but that simply means that Zu is spending their money on the product rather than buying it an undeserved or underdeserved reputation. My price represents a high percentage of the retail list compared to what commodity speakers commonly fetch in this hobby, however, you must bear in mind that these are a rare and seriously underpriced high end uber performer. There is very little else at any price that will outperform them. Personally I do not know of any speaker at any price which is clearly better. I'm planning to purchase Zu Definition 2 speakers which are pretty much a marriage of the original Def 1.5 and the Def Pro with the advantages of the Def Pro and the added versatility of having a plate amp on board. Basically, Zu offered the Def Pro to certain committed customers because it was better. Rather than offer it publicly at a higher price, they just sold it as an insider item not advertised on their website. The Def 2 is an option for you at $11,000 or you can get almost the same thing for $7500 obo. by buying mine. The Zu Druid has always been controversial because of mistakes in setup and because it was consistently attacked by people who had never seen or heard it in the Agon forums. Add to that the fact that it has a direct, frank, unvarnished, slightly colored and toe-tappingly infectious presentation, and you get a speaker that gets talked about. And it sells like crazy both new and used. The only issue that might prevent anyone from getting awesome results with Definitions is the need to sit about 9 or 10 feet back from the front plane of the drivers in order for the two full range drivers to focus properly. My room is 15 by 22 and I sit back about 11 feet from the Defs. The speakers are about 12 inches from the front wall and toed in slightly. This puts the front baffle 2 feet from the wall. I drive them with a Red Wine Audio Signature 30 amplifier for the front array. The preamp outs of the RWA then feed my Rane EQ and go on to my Crown K-2 bass amp which drives the eight 10" professional woofers. The Rane does not effect anything above 50 hz. in my system. It is there only to contour the bass signal to your room. These speakers can be made to reproduce 16 hz. very naturally. The bass is utterly effortless and, as Srajan says, "out of this world". With this set-up you can get within arguing distance of the best in the world for less money than you currently have tied up in your rig. Isn't that at all tempting?
those Vandy 5a's sold in one hour yesterday at about half price....
So I think price plays a big factor, and how much you are willing to accept in order to fuel your next audio purchase. Unless you are willing to do price drops every few days until you hit the sweet spot, or the right buyer comes along, I would just sit back and enjoy what you have.
Nothing else recreates male vocals like Zu. You hear a lot of chatter about female vocals but whose got the goods to excel in reproducing the male voice?
