The Hospital - with the great George C Scott - screenplay by  Paddy Chayefsky

Bound - directed by the Wachowski brothers

Anything by Akira Kurosawa - anything with Toshirô Mifune

The Killer and A Better Tomorrow directed by John Woo

Hero, House of Flying Daggers, Curse of the Golden Flower directed by Yimou Zhang

Older movies - M, the restored Metroplis - both  by Fritz Lang

All Quiet on the Western Front (1930) by Lewis Milestone, Paths of Glory by Stanley Kubrick - 2 of the greatest anti-war movies ever made

Master and Commander - Amazing soundtrack on Blu-Ray, must try for getting the most out of your HT system.
Very good movie too, some wonderful visuals.

Spartan - very good Val Kilmer movie (before he became the Sta Puft man).  Kinda by the numbers thriller, but still very well done.

Hard Boiled - the John Woo movie that started it all.  Chow Yung Fat in the most over the top action movie ever.  Pure sillyness, but copied shamelessly by every movie since (even by Woo himself).

+1  A classic dark comedy, with an equally classic twist at the end. George C. at his peak with a young Diana Rigg, what's not to love.

A classic social comedy I don't recall seeing mentioned, in many ways as relevant today as when it was made in '73 - Oh Lucky Man !  One of Malcom McDowell's early outings, based on a storyline of his creation. Great music provided by Alan Price, as an actor/participant in the film. Not for the short attention span group, this is an epic full length feature running pretty close to 3 hours. If you haven't seen it and wonder whether you might be interested check the reviews at amazon, they give a fair assessment of what you'll be in for.

One of my favorite movies of all time.  Pure, classic western.

The Bank Job, better the second time around.  And if you like plot twists, mystery, and Saffron Burrows, this is a veddy cool mystery.  Based on a true story of some Royal Family misbehavior some years back. :thumb: :thumb: :thumb:

In addition to the Bank Job, another British one, Enigma.  Just so happens Saffron Burrows is in that one, too.  So is a bespeckled Kate Winslet.  Both those are good, mateys.  I dare say you shalt be disappointed.  Oh, and let's not forget Sexy Beast.

Harold and Maude is a classic! :thumb:

If you like that kind of dark humor, look up "The Loved One" with Rod Steiger.  A hilarious, scathing satire!

another fine movie some may have seen only once... Kafka!  modern day film noir done right.
if you love the art of movie making, i consider it a must see. unfortunately, was only released
on DVD in europe.

The Verdict - great cast, great courtroom drama. Newman is amazing.

The Deer Hunter - another with an amazing cast. Some scenes are as dramatically intense as you can get.

The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance - John Wayne,  James Stewart, Lee Marvin as good as they can get. One of the best Westerns, ever.

Open Range - one of he most under appreciated Westerns. The way it slowly builds to it's inevitable confrontation is (purposely) slow, but well done.  Anyone that doubts Costner's acting ability should check this out. His transformation from cow hand to his former self with a 'past' is pretty darn impressive.

LA Confidential - simply the best modern Film Noir. As good as China Town. So many great performances.

Once Upon a Time in America - this movie was universally panned when it was first released in the US. It was discovered by critics that the version they saw was edited for the American market (I guess we can't handle 230 minute movies). The full version is close to brilliant.

"Going In Style".  It stars the late George Burns.
