My Lampi G4/L4 sounds incredible with iTunes, decibel, audirvana. Very happy. However, when I use audirvana and try to convert dsd to PCM the tracks load but when they play there is much static in the background. There is no static any other time. I don't upsample. Any thoughts?

Thanks.

Well, someone at CA was able to figure out the problem. It seems HF noise was the culprit. Here are the settings I use for dsd now: simple decimation with izotope settings of say steepness 10 and cutoff 0.5 and DSD playback at 176.4 (in the Custom Forced Upsampling menu, choose DAC rate of 176.4 for native 352.8).

Yes, as I suspected, it was a settings issue in A+.

I only got a very mild hiss, so maybe your speakers are moresensitive or your amps are?

All right. I jumped on this band wagon and got a 4/4 with usb, volume control, deulands. After just a few hours i'm pretty impressed. I'm replacing a W4S dac 2. I was also using and off ramp 5. I thought the usb input would trump the spdif input. I do think continuing to use the off ramp with spdif is a bit cleaner sounding. But i don't know I'm totally doing the ADD listening session and trying every resolution and genre. I am getting some clicking when switching between tracks with different resolutions while using the usb but not on the spdif.  Really stoked to bring some excitement into my all digital system.

Glad to see first impressions are positive, Guf!  Your sound will only improve from here with burn in and perhaps a rectifier tube upgrade.

What software are you using to play the DAC through via USB that is giving you pops between tracks?

Yeah really positive. i love it!
I use Audirvana+ but tried decibel pretty sure both were doing it. I'm just listening and enjoying now. I figure out more stuff tomorrow.

Hi Guf, I also use USB on the Lampi and get clicks between different resolutions on Audirvana. I don't remember if it was at the Lampi Rave in October or somewhere in this forum, and I am not an expert, but several people told me that it is normal as the DAC does not have a self mute when switching between resolutions. I just mute the DAC when I know I am switching between resolutions. I don't have any clicks when playing songs from the same album or same resolutions.

What rectifier does the unit ship with?  What's the tube type?

I've reported clicks and pops with the dac for some time and I use JRiver.  I only get a startup pop and shut down pop when I first hit play or hit stop.  If I use the pause button I can switch between resolutions all day long and no issues until I go to shut down.  I did this by setting the resolutions all to 192 in JRiver and not playing from memory and having deliberate spaces between songs.  It works and I'm enjoying the dac very much.

Either 6x5 or 5Y3 for the level 4 DAC.  Due to heat/ventilation concerns, the dual mono DACs with internal tubes only utilize 6x5.

Generally Lukasz ships the DACs with soviet tubes which are OK, but the DACs benefit from a nice tube roll like most pieces of high end tube equipment.

My usb pop and clicks went away when i set everything to up sample 176. I only tried that because i read it here. I do still have it at when start and stopping either player audirvana or decibel.  Any one with experience with using a re clocker in front of their DAC?

Any suggested replacements for the 5Y3 rectifier tube?
Thanks.

You should check out the Sylvania or Raytheon 5Y3G.

In addition to Daves mention above, I can mimic the recommendation for a Bendix 6106.

It seems odd that a 6 volt rectifier can be replaced with a 5 volt one.  Is the 4/4 only designed to send 5 volts?

The 6x5 and the 5Y3 rectis are not interchangeable.

Correct!  Either one is used or the other is used.  I was not implying either is suitable!

Thanks.  Could you characterize how the sound changes with that tube?

Phil, there is a Lampi tube rolling thread here and at Audiogon. Check em out.

Have you guys tried 6SN7s, with the appropriate adapter, instead of ECC40s?

I love the ECC40s.

My replacement set have worked flawlessly and I have not even gone to Tungsram yet!
