The drives in your link are all the same.  The only difference is color -- the numbers are the same except for SL for silver, BK for black, BL for blue and RD for red.  The different prices don't make sense but it is there is a difference in the US also.  I have one of these and it works great.

Not sure whether it's Mac formatted or Fat32 though. 

Mentioned is an option for extra power-feed if the ports are not strong enough, so that should be on the safe side.

Have you tried them on both back USB slots the simultaneously ?

The one from the Apple store is slightly different in that it is the earlier version which is only USB 2.0 and the ones from your first link are compatible with both USB 3.0 and 2.0.  That is why it is cheaper; however, it should work fine.  It will be Mac formatted but you can easily reformat to FAT32.  I don't know if there is a difference in power requirements.

I only have one of them so I don't know about using two of them together.  I use it with an OCZ Enyo SSD with no problem.

Am I right that those are bus-powered drives? If so, can the BDP drive 2 of those on the back USB ports without power-trouble? And still read thumb drives on the front?

i have not tried 2 on the back - just have one on the bottom for my main files and a Seagate 500GB on top with 2- 64GB thumb-drives in front which I alternate.

If you buy at the Apple store I would assume it is formatted for apple.

Ok Thanks James,

Returned my Lacie and asked about power consumption of it. The salesperson doubted the power-specifications of the BDP1. James, could there be any reason to suspect that? If so, how to measure it. I do have been experiencing power-related problems from the beginning. Both with Lacie drives btw....but the former drive was a 500gig and even then the bdp1 has trouble playing with that and the front-sub's loaded.

Well, just to be sure I ordered a WD passport, which seems rather difficult to get out here in the stores. Hate to buy online with HDD. (hope transport won't do any harm)

James, do you have recommendations for powered drives. I have more than enough music to fill this 1 tb drive to be, and would preferably need 2 2tb drives to be attached permanently. Deadsilent being the main specification, but reliable and speedy come in close.

I'd imagine 2 1/2" drives with the slowest spin speed would be the best

I thought only the lower rear USB socket can supply 0.5A on the BDP-1?

Correct the rear USB is .5a and the top rear and the 2 fronts have a maximum of a shared .5amps.

Good question - they all make some level of noise but I usually just put the drive in an enclosed cabinet below the BDP-1.

I have a WD My Book Studio 2TByte and it's nice and quiet. I also have a Lacie 2big dual 1.5 TByte and it's really noisy!
