Thanks for the prompt reply James.
Do either the BDP-1 or the BDA-1 benefit sonically from warm up or being left on continuously?
When shut down are they in a standby mode and still powered or are they completely off with
only a power indicator left on?

BDP-1: Leave on or turn off after use?
I have been turning it off after each listening session.
Any reason I should not be doing this and just leaving it on 24/7?

Mine only get turned off if I am going to be a way from the house for more than a week. I am a firm believer in leaving electronics at a steady temperature, not temp/power cycling continuously, causing unnecessary stress..

There is only enough power to remotely turn them on in the power off position.

Hi James,
So is it best for the electronics and the overall sound to be left on all the time if possible? Is it in fact better for/easier on the components? Does this apply to both the BDP-1 and BDA-1? I have a ARC tube pre and a 4B SST2 that I would not be comfortable leaving on all the time because of power usage and tube life of course, but normally turn
them all on 15-20 minutes prior to listening.

I think my system sounds better if left on but you will get serious arguments against that position

Like what it's doing to the environment perhaps?

Bavarian05... Why not try a network adapter rather than a 50 ft long ethernet cable? This is what I use to connect the BDP1 to my home network...and I cannot detect any degradidation to the sound quality using this method. It will allow you to access internet radio thru the BDP1.

Thank you for the suggestion, but already went through the trouble.
The tough part was hiding all the cable under the wood trim in my home.
It was a pain in the neck, but now I have a hard wired connection.

On a related note, do you notice the sound level is pretty high when listening to internet radio?
It is fairly loud even at my lowest settings on my ARC LS17. A fairly big bump compared to
listening to ripped files through the BDP-1. Not sure why this would be the case...

Yes, the volume is much higher than Hdds.

Anyone know why that is or if it is possible to adjust it?
It's fine for sitting in front of the system listening, but if I want it as background music it is just too loud.

I use the volume control on my pre-amp.
Works for me

I am not sure you are understanding my problem.
The signal seems to be considerably stronger when using the internet radio stations vs. the signal strength when listening to ripped files on the BDP-1. I am thinking maybe I should try using the single ended connection on the BDP-1 for internet radio stations and continue using the balanced out connections for the regular use of the BDP-1 for music files. Are there any issues or problems with connecting both the balanced and single ended outs at the same time and just switching between the BDP-1's outs using my preamp? Hopefully halving the voltage signal for radio stations will help me with this issue...?  Any thoughts or suggestions are appreciated.

Hi

I checked with engineering and the servers sending the radio stations set the levels and they are indeed louder. No problem using both outputs. I do not have an issue myself because the preamp allows me to turn the level down when listening to the Internet radio stations. A lot will depend on the gain in your system and the efficiency of your speakers.

Thank you James. Much appreciated.
Correction: I meant both the single ended and balanced outputs on the BDA-1, not the BDP-1.
I will try using my single ended cables too, sounds like that should do the trick.

When I bought my first 4B 33 years ago, I wrote (no email then) to Bryston asking if the amp should be left on 24/7. I received a reply from the top engineer, Chris Russell (now CEO) who told me it was best to leave it on to prolong its life. So I rewired my house to give the amp a separate circuit. But many years later I asked him the same question and he told me that with newer technology that it really wasn't necessary to prolong the life of units by keeping them on all the time. However, whether keeping units on 24/7 means they sound better, probably is purely subjective, IMHO.

I have had really good results with the 1TB Western Digital Passport drives.   I format them to Fat32 and they work great.

James

I have just ordered a WD Passport SE 1TB.  Is it still necessary to format to Fat32 to enable network file transfer or can the BDP-1 now write to NTSF as well?  You mentioned new software in an earlier post on the FAQ's board.  As these drives come formatted as NTSF is there any advantage in reformating to Fat32?

I've searched the forums but haven't found anyone reporting back on their experience with a 3TB HDD. I understand that they need an external power source, but with a rather large collection of self-ripped vinyl I need every last GB I can get :)

I suppose I'll have to pick one up and try, but if anyone has any input on the 3TB Western Digital My Book Essential please post your findings.

Likewise! Please let us know your experience with this my book. I' m considering it, to use with the the Bdp and a MacMini, connected through USB and Ethernet respectively. Hope it works for you.
I'm opting for the studio version, because of the connection possibilities.

I finally ripped most of my CD collection to the WD My Book Essential 3TB Drive. Works flawlessly with the BDP-1 - no issues whatsoever, no noticeable sound difference between that and my 250GB SSD drive.

Obviously when first connected, the update process did take a long time, but with over 2TB of audio files on the drive that's understandable.

How do you connect the Wd to your Bdp1? through its usb interface directly, or via another pc/mac and the network?
