might indeed be the answer to my original question. Exactly what I wondered. The BDP enclosure being as empty as it is,  it might not be impossible to upgrade it likewise? James, Chris?

Couldn't it be a far easier and more flexible solution than the BDE will ever be, which in itself will be just as limited by time's HDD revolution by definition.

In other words: Since the BDP relies on third-party HDD's, make the BDP a flexible and non-limited by design machine, and let memory manufacturers take care of that part? (then again, it is right now, with the limitation of having to use self powered hdd if you need the bigger ones) Just feel sorry about that limitation.

Although a BDE could be powered from the MPS-2 and have NAS capabilities, I hope the design team is considering right now.   :thumb:

I was thinking a few days ago that if the original design should have had an internal powered USB hub incorporated.
If that had been the case, then would have a lot of these issues experienced by customers not occurred? Just a thought
But I guess that's too late now?

Looks like Marius, Alpha & myself ought to be taken on as beta testers for Bryston?

Plenty of space for a DAC there as well...

This has been discussed in other threads many times over before BDP was even released and here is another thread since it's been released.   Whatever decision Bryston makes someone won't be happy about it.

* The BDP already is NAS so by extension the HDD enclosure would also be a NAS.  What more can you ask for?
* Why would I want a DAC in the BDP if I already own one?     I don't know!
* Why would I not want to buy the BDA over an added expense of  ~$1.5k DAC in the BDP?   I would much rather have the BDA or many other respectable DACs to upgrade among.
* Should I have to open up the BDP to expand the storage?   I guess you will for the HDD enclosure unless they are cleaver and use server grade trays to slide in the HDD.

There's more than one way to skin a cat.    Now lets talk about the BP26 ;)

yep, you're right. to each his/her own. I merely started this topic because of a problem I had with nowadays considered rather  normal sized HDD's that will be small or even out of production next year, and because of that wondered about the options for future upgrading.

Since storage is a sine qua non necessity for the BDP, and one of the 'features' of computer storage is that changes within the blink of an eye, a BDP that is as independent of it as possible should be the way to go. If power consumption really goes down this is a non discussion, but reality tends to prove that in declining power draws, capacity grows, and thus power consumption grows along with that capacity. So the 500mV might be a very narrow margin in the future, like it is right now.

Maybe we can still find enough HDD's that stay below that threshold today, but it could/would have been much easier and future proof  if the BDP's USB power source would have been more generous.

Then again, since we can attach anything to the USB ports, it's up to us isn't it?

Still, the BDP is no NAS. ;-)

As for the DAC, I'd rather have a more modern USB chip in the BDA, then a DAC in the BDP......

Greets!

I don't want a built in DAC
One of the reasons I bought it in the 1st place was that it didn't have a DAC
Why would I want yet another DAC
The design, DAC wise, is fine as it is.

Marius, the way I see the BDE it will be an empty enclosure for you to install upto four x 2.5" drives as you wish, upgrade and expand as time progresses...

Cheers

And just to make it absolutely clear, up to four eSATA drives

And just to make it absolutely clear, up to four eSATA drives

eSATA is basically a revised connector and cable specification to allow SATA drives to be connected by an up to two meter cable with multiple insertions and removals.  The drives in the proposed BDE will be connected to the BDP-1 host via a USB to SATA interface.  In any case, the drives themselves are SATA and the eSATA interface specification doesn't apply here.

You're correct.
I meant to say SATA not eSATA

do we have to be careful with SDD's?: http://www.audiocircle.com/index.php?topic=100023.msg0#new

also as 2.5 USB SSD's come down in price I will be moving to them.

I have had 2 SSD's die in my work laptop.

Basically the same failure rate as spinning disc.

Hi,

Please help me out here: I just found out that my power-problem with the various HDD's might be USB-cable related. To transfer a lot of gig's I connected a HDD to my Macbook, and it kept clicking and clicking, and not being read by the Macbook. Changed USB ports, but no change. I then hooked it up to the usb port on my Timecapsule, it showed up in Finder, but could not be read.  It had been connected to the BDP1 and playing fine. (could not add files through finder over the network though, that being the other reason for hooking it up directly to the MAcbook)

I then connected it with the supplied funny looking, about 8 cm long, Usb cable, set voila, working fine again. Loading as we speak.

I would have believed USB cable is Usb cable, but apparently not so. How can this be?

Or could it be a Monday-morning-product, a as we call it here, and should I return it, just to be save...

Thanks for your help, Marius

Hi Marius,

I have not encountered that before but I typically use the USB cable that came with the drive.

Yep, but this one is so short that's not an option. Lacie rikiki go. I posted a picture earlier.its here but I can't get a direct link, sorry: http://www.audiocircle.com/index.php?action=gallery;area=browse;album=5550#

Getting the feeling that my problems are Lacie related, I guess I have to try Hdd's less good looking...

I have had really good results with the 1TB Western Digital Passport drives.   I format them to Fat32 and they work great.

James,
there seem to be different versions of those passports. Do you have a link?
I find these: http://www.centralpoint.nl/harde-schijven/western-digital/my-passport-essential-se-1tb-art-wdbacx0010bsl-eesn-num-452814/
the one?

Am I right that those are bus-powered drives? If so, can the BDP drive 2 of those on the back USB ports without power-trouble? And still read thumb drives on the front?

Thanks!

Marius
