but the thing is we don't want smaller drives, we want bigger ones... :D

Hi,

I have not had any issues finding small drives?  Why do you feel that smaller 2.5 dives (1TB and smaller) are a thing of the past? Thumb-drives seem to be getting bigger all the time and SSD are just starting to come down in price.   Also the smaller drives are generally much quieter :thumb:

Good question Marius.
Last month when I received my BDP1 I tried to connect at the rear USB port Western Digital 3TB hard drive with it`s own power supply. It had about 2,3 TB of music files loaded.
However after 24 hours being connected nothing happened as it was showing "updating" all the time.
When I connected 300GB WD Passport drive it updated it within two minutes and started to work flawlessly.
In order to listen to my music library I have to copy the files on my computer from the big (3TB) one to a small (300GB).
I suppose there must be a solution for this problem or an upgrade in near future.
Curious to know experience from the others.

My 2TB drives load quickly (way faster than they did via Squeezebox) and I don't have any issues with the time it takes.

What can take a while is for MPaD to sync and provide all of its info.

Hi Marius,

Not me :thumb:- I want the drives to be dead quiet and 2.5's are much better at that - also as 2.5 USB SSD's come down in price I will be moving to them.  I am looking at the docking Station idea now and I think four 1TB - 2.5 inch drives is where I want to go rather than 3.5 inch drives.  The docking station will go in the same room as the BDP-1 so I want it to be silent :thumb:

I think the only option for people who want huge drives with huge libraries (which they will not listen to in their lifetime) is to move to a NAS based system.

which are those Zybar?

are they 'dead silent' ? Like James that's what I want them to be...

Hi James, I meant that it is the way of the world, as bigger drives get cheaper the smaller ones always fall off the bottom, how many 10/20/60/120gb drives (not SSD) do you see now?

I agree with you about the smaller drives I like the 2.5" 500gb (5400) drives, very quiet.

Cheers

Hi James, I'd like 4 TB drives too, that's why I asked whether the BDP could be upgraded to give more power. So we could plug them into the BDP1. I don't believe you denied that possibility yet, but you haven't confirmed it either....

BDE seems rather nice, but rather an expensive solution too, because we only need a little more power? And as always in the computer world, already behind the new standard of the day of release...(4 TB seems rather a lot for now, but taken into account I bought a 3 TB time capsule last month which has only 2,1 TB left today because of backups and some other stuff, might just not be a lot next year...) So even a 4 TB BDE might very soon be not enough, unless it would be flexible enough to change and update with bigger drives. Should at least have enough power for that. Maybe the MPS-2 could be used for it?

Marius

ps I might not listen to my complete collection every day, but I don't do now either, and have to store my cd's/record somewhere. Same would go for the ripped cd's. Let alone new hires downloads, which will take more and more space. ANd yes, Ive been asking and looking for a Nas solution. The BDE could incorporate that too?

Hi Marius,

The mother board is the limitation in powering the USB ports so I do not think an upgrade is possible without a change in the mother board.

o ok thanks James.

Guess we'll have to wait for your BDE then  :thumb:

will you feed it from the mps 2 and make it a Nas too? With a Gbit network interface of it's own? Would be a no-brainer.

Did you tried a Y usb cable to help the drive to suck power from both rear usb connections?
I use one with my 1TB seagate

No I did not. I tried to use two drives, so need both inputs.

No because my HDD has it`s own power supply.

Well, it all seems to be very sensitive. because of the fact that I had been testing with the various back-inputs and HdD's I hadn't noticed, but today I sent a couple of gig of tracks to my 500gig Lacie rikiki HDD attached to the BDP. In Finder on the Mac it went without problems, but then I had to update the BDP. It took minutes and minutes, and every now and then the HDD made a tsjirping sound. I feared the end of it...Tried to reboot twice, but to no avail.

Then I realized I had it attached to the upper USB port on the BDP. But because James told us 2 separate 500g's or even 750 below and 500 top should work like a charm, I thought no harm of it. Didn't work though. Then I switched to the lower USB-input, and voila, worked fine again.

Apparently the Lacie draws a lot of power, but without any of the front USB's loaded, it should have worked in the Top-Back USB I should have thought.

All the more reason for selfpowered drives? Too bad the BDP is so dependent on the right HDD. Would be really nice if this could be fixed without the need of a BDE.... :?

Hi Marius,

The BDP-1 should be able to power two drives that consume less then 500mA each.  Many 2.5" drives, even as large as 1.5 TB meet this requirement; however not all drives do, we have found by placing a powered USB hub in between the drives and the BDP-1 will resolve this issue.  Not all customers might be happy with this as this would introduce a switching power supply (for the USB hub) and some may take offence to that.  Other wise if you want just one large 2.5" self powered drive you could invest in a USB Y cable that could provide up to 1A by sacrificing your second usb port on the back.

Hi Chris,

I know of that y-cable, but reading your recommendations, there should be more than enough HDD's that don't drain the BDP. Since there is no way of finding out other then just trying (I don't know of a meter that tests the power consumption of HDD?) maybe this could help us:

Could you make a top topic which lists all HDD's you positively know that work, as in tested in the real world. Would be good to have a standardized list, with  links to their brands/type. I don;t ask you to test all known HDD's, but only to list, or let the forum users list known succes-combinations. Maybe in two categories: selfpowered, and powered.

I'll list my Lacie combo in the 3d: know not to work.....

Hi Marius,

Thats an excellent idea, i'll bring it up next time i get a chance to talk to James.  Another option is to buy an OEM drive, they have there rating written right on the drive.  The drive pictured below is rated to consume 0.451 Amps.  I'm sure you could find a local computer shop that sells oem hard drives.  Although with the flood in Thailand has caused the price of hard drives to go up significantly, so now may not be the best time to invest in another drive. Once you have the drive its just a matter of picking up a drive enclosure to stick it in.  I don't think we have every gone wrong use this approach thus far.

Ok thanks,

Ill have a look at that certainly. But just to be certain: your talking about regular HD now? Not the USB  HDD's we're  used to stick into the BDP?

All of the hard drives are native SATA hard drives.  They are either purchased already packaged in an enclosure that has an internal SATA to USB interface, or the SATA drive is purchased separately and installed in a SATA to USB enclosure like the one that Chris linked to:

learning everyday....thank you.
never thought  that spending big money on the Hi-End Bryston machinery leads to this (dare I say flimsy) fiddling with computer handwork again....Had hoped to had left that phase long time ago to be honest  :? Y-cables, oem Hdd'  and separate enclosures, trial and (the t)error of selecting suitable HDD's. Minimal margins in mA.

Maybe I'm just not being myself today, because of the frost returning, sorry for that.

I was thinking a few days ago that if the original design should have had an internal powered USB hub incorporated.
If that had been the case, then would have a lot of these issues experienced by customers not occurred? Just a thought
But I guess that's too late now?
