I have no technical expertise but what I don't like about the 50 is that the front lt,rt channels are processed differently. For DVDA, I would want all the channels to be processed the same and for HT, at least the front three for seamless sound. For bi-amping in party mode, again, I would want the processing to be the same.

Can anyone weigh in on whether the Xr50 could be used a 2 channel pre via the the tape or other outputs in a pinch.

I have not really done much in the way of comparative listening. I leave the unit on most of the day, in my office, playing jazz on the local public radio station. It does appear to have changed a bit with more hours on it.

I have a couple of SA-XR45s here for mods that maybe I can take a listen to in a week or so.

None of the Panasonic receivers are designed to be used as preamps. There is no volume control on any of the line level outputs.

The SA-XR50 uses a series of chips and surface mounted components for the front left and right channels . The other channels and the SA-xr25 and 45 all use the TI 5182.

My system is sounding better now than when I first had it as well. I'm not sure whether it's the burning in of the Athena Point 5 MKII speakers or the Panasonic SA-XR50, but I'm happy with the sound that it's putting out.

Keep us updated on any potential mods for the XR50.
I have acquired one in the last few days and it is burning in.
An IEC adapter is on the way.
Sounds pretty detailed (very impressive here )and the bass is good so far.
I am running it with a 192KHZ/24bit feed from my philips 963SA.
But everything sounds a big 'tight'. I think it needs to breakin. Also, the power cord might help.
If I like the sound, I am not keep going to keep it stock. The binding posts especially needs to be upgraded among other things.

Hi, I just got my self a XR50 and it has a few hours on it now. Anyone else find this amp extremely bright? I have a yamaha HTR-5550 and this unit is much brighter, to the point of anoyance. Did any of you find this? Will it go away with break in? About how long should it broken in for?

Wayne, have you done any more playing with the XR50? Did you discover what chips are used for the front channels? I am really enjoying mine and it sounds better the more I use it. I find I end up having to turn the volume down as I don't realize how loud I have it due to its easy sound.

I called VideoDirect on it last week and they said 4-6 business days away. $339.95 delivered from them (VideoDirect.com or Video-Direct.com). J&R Rep didn't have any info or pricing available at that time.

They seem not to be in US - yet, but very soon if VidoDirect fella' is right. Don't know how he could be tho...big companies rarely let you know when massive shipments are coming in when they've been ordered beforehand. Unless Panny has a two way Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) or somethign of the like with their dealers.

You could look on Panasonic's website...it might be there. In my search around the web, I found a few things on it in cyberspace. I think there were 3 things different on the xr70 vs. xr50. Power was the same, I remember, but don't remember the details.

Do a search, it's there.

I do know Panny's own internal PR release says a August release...so it might be a while to any of us see's it.

Dude, cheer up! In a short while you'll realize the extra $20 or so that you paid is peanuts compared to getting a deal, ultimately, anyway, and the satisfaction the unit will give. Imagine the feelings of those who shelled out tons for the latest, greatest non-digital receiver, only to discover that their unit's performance had been surpassed by these lowly, cheap units from panny!

And, every one of us reading this has done the same and probably felt the same. But, few of us have posted responses as funny as yours to your plight. If it makes you feel any better, you totally cracked me up!

Enjoy your receiver. I have the Panny 45 and really dig it.
