I purchased a Panasonic SA-XR50 receiver because I had heard great things about the equibit amps that it utilizes here. Unconventionally, I am feeding it from a Lexicon MC12 via its multichannel inputs (L C R and the side surrounds) and driving those 5 speakers with it. The Lexicon does automatic level and distance settngs for all the speakers. Now for something weird: when the Lexicon runs through its automatic distance settings, it's adding about 3 feet to each of the distance settings, compared to actual distance, and any other amps I've tried (including the JVC RX-F10). Could it be that since the receiver digitizes even the Multi-channel inputs that the digitization is taking up extra time thus fooling the Lexicon automatic distance calibration into thinking the speakers are further away than they actually are?

Any thoughts?

I got some good info on the Lexicon forums. Evidently what I'm experiencing is latency: the time it takes the Panny to digitize the signal and reconstruct it as analog to send to the amp jacks. So there is a d/a conversion when using the Multichannel ins. The JVC does not appear to digitize the signal at the multi-channel ins, so no latency. Amazingly, the Lexicon automatic calibration picks up this delay and compensates for it in the speaker distance settings.

The JVC to my ears suffers two fatal flaws: the fan noise is annoying and it runs very hot. I smell a distinct electronic smell when it's operating, which I cannot live with.

You may have one of the units with a faulty fan/PS. My fan is not audible at 3 feet and the JVC never gets more than warm. Since I normally sit with my head about 15" from the receiver, I may change the fan out anyway.

how can i get digital inputs into the panny?

does it take optical from my cd player or does it have to be coax?

They Panasonic receivers take both optical and coax. The SA-XR50 has two coax inputs. The others have one coax and at least 2 optical.

Could be, but I don't think so. It's kind of a steady drone, consistent with fan noise. Most music drowns it out, but I listen to some quiet piano music and you can "sense" it during the rests.

I don't know what to say without hearing your unit myself. I just shut my computer off to give my unit a good listen. It was 5pm, I'm not near any particularly noisy streets, no noisy neighbors, nearest street that has any traffic on it is 1/4 mile away and at a lower altitude.

The dripping of my bathroom shower faucet, the rattling lid of my steam cooker 1 floor, several walls, and 30 feet away, the occasional creak of the house, and the crickets outside are as loud as or louder than the fan of the JVC. I will admit I can hear the JVC's fan, but I can hear all those other things as well. With music louder than the threshold of perception, I simply forget about the fan noise. But I will concede that at threshold of perception, I can definitely hear the JVC. I can also hear the crickets and the steam cooker and my faucet dripping and the occasional cars on the larger street.

I like that: threshold of perception. That about describes it. It's a kind of constant drone that I'm aware of and I find annoying. Truth be told, the fan noise was not the most objectionable part. The electronic burning smell was more annoying.

My rx-10 runs very warm at idle to very hot while in use...it has also shut down a few times in multi channel mode with the volume at around 28-32 during dynamic peaks in movies.
My Pany 45's, and the 25 previous, have never shut down with the same speakers while watching movies whith large dynamic swings.

The sping clips are even cheaper than the Panys as I actually had a spring fly out of the clip while removing a surround channels speaker wire.

It did have the normal electronic burn in smell for a while and the fan is constantly on it seems.

The fan noise is not so loud it bothers me, and this is just a back up to my Panny 45's which are still being modded and I only use the rx-10 for movies.

Thanks, Ears. That's about what I've been experiencing. The Panny XR50 exhibits no such electronic smell. Again, the fan noise isn't really loud or objectionable in any rational way: but it doesn have a subliminal effect and I wish it weren't there.

I recently picked up the XR50 and am thinking about replacing the power cable as per many of the suggestions made here. But I'm pretty new to all this, and was wondering what options I have. I'd like to keep the warranty intact, so a more professional solution like the Bolder Cable mod is unfortunately out of the question. Is the Audioquest NRG-1 my only option (since it matches the plug in the back of the Panny)?

Also, to chime in on the rx-f10, I tried it for a week, but returned it mostly because of that fan noise and the fact that the unit did get pretty warm on the side. Not burning hot, but I wasn't confident that it wouldn't fail at a later date since such temps can't be good in the long run.

Try the PS Audio Power Punch for a better guage and shielding and better price. You can also get a isolation transformer for under $250 which will provide a slightly better soundstage.

cwchiang - you could also consider the adapter from http://www.takefiveaudio.com/adapters_and_specialty_connectors.htm since they carry some cool adapters - then you can use any power cord that tickles your fancy...
