As you guys know, the contents of the tour box of Nagys is quite full and being expected to pass them along within a few days, my first inclination was to completely re-cable my system with Nagys wiring. Before this my cabling consisted of MAC Ultra silver+, Grover SCs, MAC power cables and digital and some home made speaker cables based on a 6moons article.

I listened to my system with all Nagy in place for about two days and I’ve gotta say, they are the cleanest, fastest, most coherent cables I have ever used. They were extremely well resolved from top to bottom and very, very neutral.

I am very impressed what these cables as a system brought to the table in terms of technical merit. I’ve never heard my system sound as nimble and open before and I really got the feeling they weren’t adding anything to the system. Notwithstanding their technical merit, however, I found myself slightly detached from the music, feeling the change in presentation to be more intellectually stimulating than emotionally stirring. What I gained in transparency and speed I lost in warmth and body and my system was not particularly warm in the first place.

These cables do a lot of things very right but as with any component, synergy is crucial. I think these cables as a system would kick some serious butt in a warmer, fatter system than my own. My father’s recently sold McIntosh system would probably benefit greatly.

After trying them as a system for a couple of days I decided to back off a little on the cables and reduced them to a powercord on my preamplifier and DAC and the speaker cables. In this configuration they have really shinned. My system was enhanced from where it was before the Nagy’s in terms of openness and speed, but got took back a little warmth and made for an overall more engaging listen.

In my system straight Nagy wire was just a little uninvolving to me, but a smartly integrated blend added a bit of extra excitement along with a gain in the cliché audiophile adjectives. Enough of a gain that I’m actually toying with the idea of ordering a pair of the speaker cables for my Abbys.

I’m going to listen for another day then pass them along to John in Canada. I’ll update this post if I have any additional impressions to add.

My system was composed of the following:

Cain & Cain Abby
Yamaha 315 sub (inexpensive sub I'm playing with at moment)
First Watt F1 (Tim Rawson)
Eastern Electric Minimax Preamp (factory upgraded)
Eastern Electric Sabre32 DAC (Squeezebox Touch & Philips 963SA for transports)
Ray Sammuels Nighthawk
Well Tempered Reference
Denon DL-103D cartridge

Not direct, but I'm happy to share my opinions on both.

To me, despite being silver cables too, my grovers have a bit more warmth and body to their presentation. They are less transparent, not as well resolved and more congested sound stage wise. The Grovers never sound hyped up or edgy and have a more relaxed sound and is, in my system, more engaging.

I tend to think there may be something to Nagy's claims of it being a measurably superior line of cables, however, it makes me wonder a bit if absolute neutrality is what is enjoyable for me.

A couple of these cables in the signal chain may really open up a lush/romantic system.

In my diy cable experience, I found that fast but lean sounding interconnects will benefit by increasing the gauge of the ground wire. My previous favorite was using 47Labs' OTA wires with a single run for hot and and two runs for ground conductors. Sound is much more fleshed out as a result of adding the extra run on the ground conductor. Highs are just a tad more muffly tho.

Since Nagy's cables are coaxial cables, not sure if that is "experimentable"...

viggen - If you want a heavier gauge, just use a heavier gauge cable, not add an additional conductor. Your cables sounded "muffly" because one center conductor + 2 outer conductors + hanging shield (correct?) = very poorly designed cable, that would test bad for precise signal transfer.

In addition to that, why does it have to be the ground (as you call it) conductor that's doubled? Audio signals are alternating currant, so it would make virtually no difference which conductor you doubled.

Nope, don't want heavier gauge cables.

The only way I can answer your question as to why double the ground conductor is to ask you to try it out yourself. I don't know if there will be any measurable difference. However, you should hear an audible difference.

The cables are on their way to John now. For future reference, it may make sense to make separate tours for different countries. It cost $37 bucks to get it to Canada from by cheapest usps method available and I'm sure he'll pay that again to get it back into the US...

I first want to say thank you to everyone on this tour list for giving my cables a try and for leaving honest comments. I know that shipping is expensive, so here's what I can do... If anyone on this list decides to purchase any of my cables, I will take off whatever you paid for shipping (during the tour) off the cable's cost. Plus give you free shipping when I send it out.
