Brain Donors- A madcap rehash of Marx Brothers style only with faster timing.  The "Swan Lake" scene literally put me on the floor in laughter. This little gem shows John Turturro at his absolute best.

Oh man, I saw this a couple of years ago...I agree about the Swan Lake scene...up until that point, however, the film was giving me a headache lol. Talk about the perfect film for those with ADD!! There were times when I just wanted to yell at the screen and say, "shut UP for two seconds!!!!". That being said, I did find the movie funny, if not overly obnoxious

Off the top of my head:

The Professional (already mentioned)
Eye of the Beholder (critics hate it)
The Messenger (used to think Mila is cute)(critics hate it)
The Princess Bride (Hate to admit it but I like it.  Everytime I catch it on TV, I watch it til the end)
Changeling (one with Jolie)

And, I like pretty much all the movies with big armies involved:

Gladiator
Troy
300
Kingdom of Heaven
LOTR
Most Akira Kurosawa movies including Ran and Rashoman

Mongol was great although it was somewhat hard to follow at times.  Watching it the second time made it much easier to follow.

Some friends just brought up "Old Boy" over email today.  Haven't seen it in a while but I think I'll watch it again.  Its a Korean film with a very disturbing storyline.  Definitely not for kids or those easily disturbed.  Warning here, some very graphic and heavy themes are dealt with in this film.  However it is very well made.  Great acting and an excellent fight scene.  There are two other related films which I haven't seen yet but have been meaning to.  The first is called Sympathy for Mr. Vengance, Old Boy is the 2nd and Sympathy for Lady Vengance is the third.  All directed by Park Chun Wook.  If they are like Old Boy they are all very violent but well acted and directed.

I still love Heat.  Coffee shop scene between DeNiro and Pacino is great.

I'll look up the euro version of the Professional...Leon.  I loved the american version.

The Professional will hardly come as a surprise to anyone but this has good music, introduced us to two new actors, and Natalie Portman deserved to be nominated for her role.  You can "feel" her.  When she says goodbye to Leon, it bring tears to my eyes.  Heck, I just saw that I had posted this already.  Oh, well.

Speed II.  The greatest movie of its genre.

Is that "Need For Speed II"? from 1997? I can't find Speed II.

Just rented this this week and thought it was done very well, even though it's subtitled ... Mongol.

Enjoy,
Bob

It was critically acclaimed.  Of course, it's a typical non-major studio film, shown on small screens, unlike thoss blockbusters.  Bet most didn't even notice it when it was around about may be six months ago. :thumb:

Very obscure, and politically dated, but "Whoops! Apocalypse!"  was a scathing British political satire that took no prisoners.  Funny as hell, in a Monty Python vein.  There was an American version with Loretta Swift (Switt?) that wasn't anywhere near as good.

Charlie Chaplin's classic "The Great Dictator" has some great scenes of what was to come in Europe in WWII.  A comedy, believe it or not.

Here ya go . . John Cassavetes' trilogy:  Faces; Shadows; Too Late Blues.  In the latter, get a load of Stella Stevens singing (acting) some very nice wordless jazz.  These were low budget movies.  And talk about independent!

I don't agree with some of the synopses in the links. Obviously, I think each a standout. I have not duplicated some of the outstanding previous recommendations.

Funny how some movies that I really liked at the time have proven to be real cheese when viewed again after so many years (i.e. Highlander comes to mind).

Quoting myself to add that if you haven't seen this, go out of your way to see it.  Zack, this is right up your alley.  It's got all the right moves.  Most of all, charm.  In spades.  Never thought Burt Lancaster could be funny?  He's a peach in this.  It's about a young, ambitious oil exec sent from dear old Houston to outer Scotland to try and exploit the locals who are a lot smarter than he is.  It has tons of personality, it's hilarious, warm and sneaky clever.  The walk ons are even funny.  No opportunity is missed.  At the risk of sounding corny and overly sentimental, it's about as endearing of a flick you just might have ever seen.

Bread and Tulips

both very well crafted modest movies, and fairly obscure - you would need to find a good video store.

Jim, remember seeing it when it first hit the video store and you are right.  This movie is the very definition of Films worth a second look.  Thank you for reminding me of this film.

Speaking of epics like Spartacus  :thumb:  one of the best films I have ever seen is the fully restored Lawrence of Arabia.  If you can see it in a proper theater or the world's best home theater (like Bob's from St Louis), DO SO!  It is visually stunnning and is a great primer for all the crap going on today in that little corner of the world.
