Watched the " Rum Diary" last week. Quite enjoyed it, they didn't follow the book exactly, but close enough.I just about lost it with the expression "accusatory giblet".

takashi miike's remake of kobayashi's Hara Kiri and ishibashi yoshimasa's utterly crazy film from last year, Milocrorze, both available from merlin at samuraidvd.com.

i expect that miike's film will eventually be released as a 3d blu-ray, but meanwhile merlin's dvd transfer is as good as anything i've seen.  the film itself compares favorably with kobayashi's original, although no one can possibly match the intensity of nakadai tatsuya in that final bloodbath.

i've never seen anything quite like Milocrorze.  the swordfight in the brothel is one of the most amazingly, and beautifully, choreographed sequences i know, like an Ukiyo-e print come to life.  i found myself re-playing that part over and over.  ishibashi has joined the list of my top 10 film-makers.  for an example of his late night tv series Vermillion Pleasure Night, i recommend "the english lesson":

Shame when you get better sound for "free" at home with a lame movie than what you pay for a good film at the movie house.
-Bill

Couldn't agree more Bill, I paid £25 for the privilege to go to the cinema to see Dark Knight Rises, which I was extremely looking forward to, but the sound was so bad I couldn't hear half the dialogue which ruined the film to be honest, maybe I've been spoilt by the SP3, but in future I'm just going to wait for the Blu Ray to be released and enjoy a film in all its glory at home.

Battleship. I enjoyed this movie for what it was, an entertaining action flick. Close to reference for Audio and Video but the acting........no comment. A guilty pleasure!

Finally bothered to watch (for the first time) the remake of Star Trek. i was pleasantly suprised they did such a great job of NOT making some boring movie.
The only odd part was how the original characters get together, even though they are different.
And the way the idea of an alternate timeline fits in so well with a different history of the way the Enterprise crew get together.

Now we've finished setting up HiFi Lounge and the PJ is installed along with the SP3 I'm really looking forward to catching up on some films over the winter months, Watched Insidious last night, was really looking forward to a good old scare, didn't happen unfortunately, seemed to set the scene really well but couldn't deliver at the end.

has anyone actually seen a good horror lately? I do wonder if it is actually possible to make a scary film nowadays, any recommendations will be much appreciated.

Streaming on Netflix and available on rental..."The hidden face" (La cara oculta) a 2011  Spanish/Colombian film that far exceeds expectations and is a smart, finely crafted thriller. This one has a bit of
'Rear Window" a dash of Poe and a good bit of the luminous Martina Garcia.A love triangle involving a symphony conductor and his muses enduring the odd penalties of infidelity.A great script that twists and turns along the narrow paths of passion.I must warn you that this has a fair bit of nudity.Thank you Martina.

Watched a couple of very different films yesterday -

Y Tu Mamá También - An interesting Mexican road trip movie.

Smokin Ace's - OK, but I don't think I'll bother with Smokin Ace's 2. Aleshia Keys did look hot though :P

Never really fancied this movie before but last night I thought I'd give it a try, what a fantastic film with amazing performances from both Sheen and Langella -

Hi Guys,

I thought I would re-awaken this thread being that it is Christmas time and everyone will hopefully have a little more time to sit back and watch the odd movie or 2, and especially as I have just taken delivery of a PowerPac 300 to drive my centre speaker to complete my Bryston/PMC setup  :)

Really didn't expect much from this film tbh, with a title like that I thought you could really guess the story, how wrong I was, a film of 2 halves really but great fun, highly recommended if you fancy a horror film with a twist

Couldn't resist posting a picture of my PowerPac 300 as well :thumb:

Have a great Christmas everyone :)

Cheers,
Paul.
