Sweet Sixteen (2002 - Scottish).
When the title showed up in my mailbox I was disappointed, thinking I somehow entered a wrong film on my Block Buster queue. I did not recall what the film was about and with a title like that I was worried. I hate teen-centric, coming-of-age films. But this was quite a good, gritty film about a mid-teen boy finding ways to earn some money in a very difficulyt environment to help reunite his sad family. Not a Disney film. Very good flick.  :thumb:

Best things I've seen recently will require a torrent search...
The astonishing Borgen from Scandanavia (via the BBC)
and The Bridge and The Killing which all  requiring a bit of downloading savvy.
All remarkable, gripping and brilliant series. Seek and you shall find.

Finally got round to watching 'WarHorse' with my daughter the other night on blu-ray, the sound through the SP3 was just amazing, probably the best sounds I have ever heard anywhere, the SP3 just smashed it. Picture quality was also amazing and a surprisingly good film  :thumb:

Cheers

In the passed two weeks I have watched Real Steel, In Time, Captain America, the new Transformers, Drive Angry, Star Wars trilogy, Stealth, Drive, U571, Valkyrie (watch the desert scene, Tom Cruise is chatting with a General when a Spitfire does a surprise approach from really low behind you before it is joined by two other fighter planes then reeks havoc with heavy gun fire on the ground troops), Inglorious Bastards, and Master and Commander (the sound of the cannons ripping through the ships hull and the footsteps running above you on the upper deck had my visitors either ducking for cover or looking up to see who was running across the roof). All have fantastic action sequences, and really great surround effects. Watched a few episodes of Grimm. For a tv series I am quite impressed with the effort put into the show. Good sound in there too. Oh. Another good series was "The Pacific". Watch the HD version. Really good sound movement there too.

Watched 'The Other Guys' a couple of night ago, not classic Will Ferrel but well worth a watch, I don't know what it is with Will Ferrel movies, the comedy can be quite subtle at times and I always expect more laughs but when you've finished watching it you can't wait to watch another of his movies, definitely recommended though.

Just got round to watching Rabbit Hole, I really didn't fancy it tbh, my wifes choice, I thought it would be a chance to have a good kip in front of the TV, how wrong I was, a really absorbing movie with some excellent performances from Nicole Kidman and Aaron Eckhart, maybe not a film for everyone but I found it quite moving and equally heart wrenching at times and I haven't even got kids, I can't imagine how powerful it could be if you have. 9/10.

On Sunday had a group of friends over. We watched "Swinging with the Finkels". Its a comedy with a realistic look at a married couple who very briefly try swinging to save their marriage. The married couples in my group of visitors had little chuckles between themselves during the movie - so it was something they could relate to as married people (no...not the swinging you dirty minded people!!). As a single person I found the humor and realism quite entertaining.

Then we watched "John Carter" an action movie that must have hired creatures from Stars Wars. Thrilling action sequences and really good sound to give your cinema a proper workout!!

Popcorn was uncontrollably spilt everywhere as the fright sequences erupted and people jumped in their seats during "Playback". Very basically this is a horror movie about a deceased father that possesses his son via a camcorder and the evil that follows. Decent horror movies are rare....I rate this one highly.

The movie "The Grey'"  Just outstanding in 7.1 surround.  The hollowing of the wolves is frightning.

Hi milford3

I recently downloaded that movie (the grey). I think I will set the aircon to the maximum cold setting,  to get the "feel" of the movie environment, then watch that movie. Thanks for the input!

Temple Grandin. An HBO show now on dvd that is stunning. Clever, funny, entertaining and thought provoking. Got the dvd from Netflix and then bought it. One of the best I've seen in a long time, and I watch a lot of movies. Wife agrees.

Some I have watched lately:

The Tree of Life
Hatfields and McCoys
Patton
Many of the films from 1939 (the peak of hollywood as far as I am concerned)

Two of the best films ever made were made in 1939.  "Gone with the Wind" and "The Wizard of Oz."  Best picture in 1939 was "Gone With the Wind."

Last night I watched "Journey 2 : The Mysterious Island". Good family movie. No car chases or intense gun fights (aaahhh)    The story is about a son who cracks a code and goes in search of his grandfather who sent him the code. Think Indiana Jones meets Jurassic Park. Really good picture and sound effects. Worth recommending.

Also watched "Get him to the Greek". The beginning made me wonder where is the movie going, but I followed it anyhow. Turns out to a semi decent movie of a rock n roller's lifestyle and how he comes to terms with his issues. It has it funny moments, worth a watch, but not not a movie to keep in my collection .

Anatomy of A Murder on Criterion is an incredible experience. Superb Duke Ellington score, Jimmy Stewart and a young George C Scott. Blu Ray video and sound is excellent. Sharply written with a sly wit. They don't make them like this any more

also recently saw Blowout another Criterion blu Ray. John travolta is mesmerizing in this film. But I still think dePalma has an unhealthy view of women.

Midnight in Paris is a great Woody Allen movie
The Debt is a great thriller about the Israeli Mossad.

Off to see Dark Knight Rises tonight, to say I'm excited is an understatement, I've managed to keep away from all the reviews so I don't really know what to expect, if it can top Dark Knight it will have to be very special indeed :)

"Brave" at the theater. It was excellent. Shutter Island on TV (through my Bryston processor!). That was rather lame. Shame when you get better sound for "free" at home with a lame movie than what you pay for a good film at the movie house.

I thought "Safe House" was very well done, excellent film in my book.
