Starting a CAPS v3 build
« on: 13 Dec 2013, 11:07 pm »
A few days ago I decided I wanted to build a CAPS v3, based on the Topanga version.

I may upgrade it in the future, but figured I would start with the low end model and work my way up as budget and time allow.

Made my first purchase today, bought a Samsung 840EVO 256GB SSD today from my local Frys.
http://www.frys.com/product/7796538?site=sa:adpages%20page:P7_FRI%20date:121313

I could have bought it cheaper from B&H, but I like to support local stores when possible, and also like instant gratification.

So far, that's how I am with this build  :D.

Next step is probably to buy Win 8, and then the MB and case and PS from Logic and I can start assembling.

Planning to put the music I usually listen to on the SSD, and will maybe hook up a sata hard drive to expand.  Decided against NAS for now.

So I’ve run into my normal problem, too much research   :D

After deciding to try a CAPS V3, I started looking at using Server 2012 as the OS running on a Xeon processor and MB.  This is more money, which would delay this project.

So I am currently considering using a Xeon compatible MB, but using a cheap Celeron process to save some money.  Could upgrade the processor later if I feel the need.

I also started looking at heatsink options.  I wanted to go passive, but am now leaning towards a low profile active heatsink, probably a Scythe one.  I should be able to lower the fan speed enough to make it silent.

What chassis/case are you planning on using?  Many of them do a very good job of cooling so that a fan-based cooler isn't needed.

So I could go fanless with something like this
http://www.quietpcusa.com/Streacom-FC8-EVO-Fanless-Home-Theater-Aluminum-Chassis-P1014.aspx

and I saw some Akasa cases that look nice, but I was wondering if they are too small.

I would like to be able to fit a couple SSD drives, or maybe one SSD drive and one CF card with an adapter.

I also plan to get the Paul Pang PCIE USB card at some point, so I need room for that too.

If I go active heatsinking, was just going to use the CAPS recommended case.

That will work with the Intel S1200 mobo.

This is what I will be building:

Xeon Music Server
Intel S1200KPR Server Motherboard - Socket H2 LGA-1155
Intel Xeon E3-1265LV2 2.50 GHz Processor - Socket H2 LGA-1155
2GB, 240-PIN Dimm, DDR3 PC3-85 - CT25672BA1067
Streacom FC8 Evo
PPA picoPSU 160 W
Paul Pang USB v2.0
Corsair Force Series GS CSSD-F128GBGS
Win Server 2012 R2

Thanks for the info.

I was planning to use the same MB.
Not sure about the RAM yet, I was looking at that.

I was wondering if people think the processor makes a difference in the sound?

I was looking at an inexpensive, low power Celeron figuring it would have enough hp to do what I need for this machine.

I think Phil (and others) have said that the Xeon chip sounds better because of its extremely low latency.

OK, so maybe I do that later, but I don't have $300 for a Xeon right now.

And I guess they picked that Xeon because it has the lowest power consumption.

So I just bought a "not perfect" Streacom FC8 evo chassis so I guess I'm going fanless.

Looks like a pretty nice solution, has heat pipes to conduct the heat from the processor to the chassis.

Two pieces down, many more to go

Starting a build also, just going budget with Intel DN2800MTE board. Also have a PPA V2 card on the way. :)

What are you using for the 5V linear power supply? I picked up an Acopian 5EB200 for $20 shipped on eBay.

And don't forget about the PCI-E 1X Slot Riser Card Extender Flexible Extension Flex Ribbon Cable, none in my town so I had to order one.

There was a 90 degree cable in China for $9 but it is gone now.

I guess im building a variant of the Topanga or Lagoon with PPA USB card and M350 case.

WGH, thanks for the heads up. I will get one with the motherboard order. Plan to use RavPower battery charging cell with USB cable I bought from Paul. Hope I wont be searching for an Acopian.

For the PCI extension card, I would use the first one in the link below, if it doesn't interfere with anything in your PC.
A short board won't mess the PCIE signal up as much as the board with the longer cable.

And for those interested, the PPA card is here

His stuff appears to get good feedback, and seems to be good bang for the buck.

Randy, can't you also just use a ribbon cable?  That's what I did with my FC-10 build.  The bracket attaches to the case and the ribbon cable connects the card to the mobo.

Is it just me or is the PHT fanless chassis look the same as Streacom chassis?

I have asked them twice if it is just a rebranded Streacom case.  I haven't gotten a straight answer.

The specs and look are identical.

Looks like this board is getting hard to find - Intel DN2800MT. What are options for something similiar?
