I live six miles from Altec Lansings headquaters.  Love their tent sales!

Mine were a pair of Radio Shack Nova 8b's that I ran with a Radio Shack receiver (I believe it was an STA-47). They looked like these

Dang, I don't remember the first set - but, it was probably Lafayette Criterion 2001 or something like that growing up in Long Island.

But, I remember my first good set was 3D Acoustics 3D610B...a (passive) ported sub and (sealed) satellite combo that sounded really good hooked up to a Marantz 2230 receiver  :thumb:

Smaller Advents in 1969  Realistic Integrated amp w/phono and a classic AR turntable don't remember the cartridge.  One of the wifes or hostages kept it and most of the records.

Larry

edit:checked an article from Stereophile and it must have been the standard Advents as the Smallers weren't available until 1973 but I'm sure it was 1969

Sansui S-520.  I remember hearing a fellas S-730 or something and wanting a pair.  I bought the 520 from a NY ad in the back of Stereo Review or Audio and I remember it saying dome tweeter.  It came with a 2" cone tweeter.     I called them and the fella gave me the run a round.  I was probably in 7th grade.

A pair of cheap Marantz floor standers.  I think it was probably 1986.  They looked like these, SP1200's.  And the timeline matches...so these are probably them, but not 100% sure.

BIC America still makes the Venturies.  I have this model center for my surround setup.  It's outstanding!!  It sounds better than $500.00 centers I have heard.

I had something like this, purchased around 1976, which got me to about 1993.  My pet cockatiel helped destroy the foam exterior stuff.

To my untrained adolescent ears, they sounded fine, and they got me from junior high through four years undergrad and six years of grad school.

B&W DM640i

They were very cool at the time, but had a very bright high end. It was a ported loudspeaker but it came styrofoam cylinder inserts to seal the port, making the bass a whole lot smoother. I lived with them for about a year, and then I moved on to Legacy Studios.

Anand.

Not counting my college "suitcase" system my first speakers were Radio Shack Electrostat 2a.  First job out of graduate school and finally not a starving student anymore.  I bought a 35mm camera and Radio Shack system.  There weren't many other options where I lived. Package included the 2a's, RS branded Garrard turntable and Allied 495 receiver with cool black-out dial.   Replaced with Large Advents (walnut) and a McIntosh 6100 integrated.  Then stacked Large Advents. Then DQ-10s.  By then I was slipping down a Black Diamond run without my poles and I obviously wasn't starving anymore.
