My first speakers were DIY. I built two boxes with a single hole cut in each. Placed one driver in each and hooked them up to an old Eico integrated amp. Sound? who cared.
The first speakers I bought were a pair of Altec Lansing 887A bookshelf speakers. I bought them along with a Pioneer receiver and a dual turntable. I was in heaven.

My first real speakers were Speakerlab K-Horns that I build from the plans in 1975. I used a EV T-350 Alnico tweeter instead of the standard T-35. The money saved by not purchasing their kit was used instead to purchase my first table saw.

I must have really gotten the bug, as I've been building my own speakers ever since then.

Yes, I remember those Infinity's. The tweeter was rather "hot" sounding, IIRC.!

I bought a pair of speakers at a flea market that looked like these, but were some knockoff brand.  Cheapest possible materials in every way imagineable, no idea how I put up with them.  But they were an upgrade from a boombox.  The cabinets have been cut up and now serve as makeshift tables.

Mine were Celestion DL8/ii
2-way sealed box speakers, 8'' woofer, 1'' metal tweeter.
Bought with what remained of my student loan in spring of 1990.
A pair of simple stands, and a Cambridge Audio P70 integrated.
Source was a Harman-Kardon HD7500 CD player. (1-bit was all the rage back then)

I got used to the sound, but haven't played them in a decade, so I can't say how good they are/were.

They are still sitting in the basement 'man-cave' at my dad's.

My first QUALITY speakers were some 3.5 way Bang & Olufsen speakers.  Can't remember the designation (late 70's) but there was some interesting design work going on and they were very nice to look at.  Full bodied and rich and detailed sound as I remember.

1974 - Denver,Colorado

Bose 901 Series II, Pioneer SX1010, Phillips GA-212, Stanton 681EEE, all bought from the original Sountrack store in Arvada. I had to finance it.
my wery first stereo was an all-in-one rig from panasonic, purchased when i was 11, from paper route and allowance and gift money savings - cost me $120.  (and i sold it for $90 four years later - i was into stereo bargaining from a young age, haha!)  it looked like this:

the matching turntable fir right on top:

but, my first "real" stereo was similar to macro's, purchased two years later, in 1969.  (my step-brother worked at a stereo shop, so i got it at cost. :green:):
bose 901's, pioneer sx828 receiver, dual 1219 turntable.  i still have the speakers, but they have not seen an electronic signal in years.  they served as bedside night tables until about eight years ago...

First set of "real" speakers (excluding any kind of cheap Sony surround add-on or anything else) was Sapphire Audio surround set up (SB bookshelfs, SC center, & SS dipole surrounds); I still have the SBL bookshelfs and I'm trying to sell those to upgrade the other system.

I always had crappy boomboxes.  My first speakers that did not come with any electronics were Paradigm Studio 60v3

A pair of big Sansui speakers I schlepped (one at a time) from a Da Nang Marine Corps PX to my hootch a half mile away in 100 degree temps. I immediately had them shipped home and didn't listen to them or the Sansui receiver I bought out of a catalog for probably another six months. The speakers cost $150 the pair which I thought at the time was a king's ransom, which it was when you're making about $200 a month, including extra combat pay of about $25! Well, room and board and medical care was part of the bargain. Years later during one of my moves out of an apartment I abandoned them and a Teac tape recorder and left them sitting on the floor, donating them, more or less, to the landlord.

My first PAIR of speakers were a couple of JBL D130s in vented enclosures.  Wonderful midbass and midrange for their day but a little rugged / ragged on the top and lacking deep extension for their size (15").

My first pair of speakers for more serious listening were a couple of AR 2aX powered by a Dynakit ST-70 (later a pair of Mk IIIs) and a PAS2x preamp.  Didn't suck.   :)
