I had a set of these two way AR speakers. Bought in 1985, when I was in Japan. Had a Denon PMA-790 amp and a Teac reel-to-reel and a Yamaha turntable.  It was sweet and sounded like a dream. I would buy LP's, record them directly to my reel-to-reel and then put them back in there covers to stay.

(the original speakers were ruined when my home flooded back in 99'.)

Great speakers!  Really opened my ears to what could be had, first time I heard them.  My best friend bought a pair, called me up, and said "Bob, you GOTTA come hear these!".  We spent many happy hours in front of them.

Have you had to have them refoamed?

JBL LX2600 - I beat the snot out of those in college, and they always did great.

A friend had a pair of Bose 901s that we worshipped, though in retrospect, it's unclear why.

Then a roommate picked up a used pair of Celestion 3s and my eyes were opened - clean tight bass - WOW!

Not sure what you mean by refoamed. The speakers are still stock but my wife's cat destroyed the foam dust covers. I replaced them with black speaker fabric. They're a bit rolled off on the highs but I love their dispersion and soundstaging. I still get compliments on their sound at dinner parties with a Panasonic XR 55 receiver and a Pioneer multi-player. Cheap thrills!  :thumb:

My first system Doesn't qualify since it was a Sony all in one with detachable speaker(got it when I was 13, worked since 12). First official were a pair of small floor standing by a company called Avid. Can't remember the model but were a joy and this trip really got started.

My first speakers were Acoustic Research AR14's, bought in 1977 - used through college and until I was stationed in Japan in 1989.  Powered by a Kenwood KR-4070 receiver and source was a Kenwood Turntable (don't remember which one).

My first real speakers were a pair of Cerwin-Vega! 313 12" 3-ways.

I paired them with a Pioneer SX-680 receiver and a Pioneer PL-200 turntable.  I was 19 and I loved that system.

AR 3a

Bought new from local dealer in 74.  Highly recommended, though they rolled off the high end a bit.

12" Electro Voice coaxials in corner horn cabinets - made in the early 60's and inherited from an uncle. Used them them with my Scott integrated tube amp (which I though was an old-fashioned clunker back then - everyone else had solid-state!).

JBL's circa 1972, large standmounts, 8 inch full range driver with 8 inch passive radiator.  These were party speakers (lots of spls and 60 Hz bass).

Next up, 1977 I.M. Fried Model B, LS3/5A sort of clone (small standmount 2-way).  These were much more accurate and imaged like champs.  Later on I upgraded the drivers, moddifed the cabients from sealed into aperiodic, and added the matching 8 inch woofers in 6 cu. ft. mass loaded transmission lines.  Those woofers were too much (rated 114 dB at 17 Hz) for my house.

In those 5 years I'd gone from high school to college and found a great local stereo shop that helped introduce me to the high end.

First real speakers were the Speakerlab K-Horns that I bought the plans for and built the cabinets in 1975. I used a pair of alnico Electrovoice T-350s instead of the smaller T-35s.

My first real speakers were a pair of Magnepan SMG that I bought in the early '80s (found this picture on the web);

I sold them in 1986 when I purchased a pair of ADS L1290 series 2.  I still have them and used them as my main speakers until early this year when I bought a pair of Salk HT2-TL.  That makes only 3 pair in 30 years. :green:
