Sealed Type N3 Building
« on: 17 Jul 2010, 01:02 pm »
Woodworking and speaker building are my hobbies. During the past year I have built and sold a number of pairs of Neo 2X’s just for the fun of building. Really like the Neo 2X sound quality. Within the next couple of weeks I plan to start  my next project which is to build a pair of sealed type N3’s. Enclosure style will be similar to the previous Neo 2X’s I built which have rounded front vertical edges and finished in natural cherry. If anyone might be interested just send me a PM.

Hi Ron!

I'm looking forward to reading about, and seeing pictures of the build!

I've seen pictures of your work before and know these will turn out really nice. :eyebrows:

Are you going all out on the kit options this time around?

Hi Ruben

Thanks. I do plan to post pictures during the N3 (sealed) construction process. Also, pictures when they are finished. Also plan to go with all the performance upgrade option goodies including the Sonicap Platinum bypass capacitors. Used the Platinum bypass caps in the last pair of Neo 2X's that I built and it definitely did make a noticable improvement in sound quality.

Thanks for posting pictures of the speakers you've recently built for all of us to see. Your work is absolutely first class and the speaker enclosures are stunningly beautiful !  :eyebrows:

I will definitely be watching for your build thread. :thumb:

I'm very interested in hearing your thoughts on the N3S vs. the N2X's.

Thanks again for the compliments.

Have fun!

Ruben

Don't know how much more it costs to build the cabinet for the N3S, but given the kit price is so close it would be worth it just for the extra sensitivity.

It wouldn't be too much more to build the N3S vs N2X, but the cost would depend on how it is finished and the performance options chosen. Dvenardos is correct that the N3S does have a higher sensitivity and handles more power  than the N2X since each speaker uses two (2) woofers in parallel.

Wouldn't the N2X play lower?

Both the N2X and the N3S need to be used with a subwoofer. I would think the N3S should have slighter better bass with a total woofer area of 190 sq. cm vs 137 sq cm for the N2X.

ALso, the sensitivity of the N3S is greater.

Maybee I should read the whole post before I put in my two cents.

Ordered the N3S parts yesterday from Danny. Hope to start building the enclosures sometime next week if the weather is cooler. It has been really hot here in Virginia for quite a few weeks now. I will start posting pictures of the construction process if I do.

Ron, I wonder if Danny ever tried the N3S as a "leaky box" aperiodic design?  It doesn't change the enclosure dimensions but allows the drivers to operate a little more efficiently.

Many years ago I built an ACI kit that had two 1/2" holes on the back covered by soft foam on the inside.  It seemed to work well.  I'm sure Danny has an opinion, maybe he'll let us know.

Roy, I remember those. If I am not mistaken, Dynaco was the first speaker manufacture to use this pressure release idea called the Aperiodic or non-resonant design. Later on Dynaudio and Scan-Speak came out with the Varovent which basically did the same thing. This design doesn't extend the bass response but is suppose to make the bass response tighter and clearer sounding by reducing the impedence peak in half at resonance. I used the Varovents in previous speaker building projects years ago and they seemed to work very well. Seems to me it was most effect for speaker enclosures with large internal volumes, so I don't think it would be very effective for smaller volume sealed type speaker enclosures like the N3S or N2X.

Ron, thanks for commenting on that.  I'm sure you're right since you have far more experience with speakers and speaker enclosure building than I do.

I'll be watching this thread with interest.

Started building a pair of N3S's earlier this week. So far, I have assembled the sides, top, bottom, braces, back, and built the high and low pass crossovers. Crossovers have Sonicap caps with Platinum bypass caps and Mills resistors. Hope to finish the enclosures friday, sand, prep, and veneer in cherry on saturday.

The following are some pictures showing the progress so far. I will post pictures next week of the finished speakers.

As said before, you do great work, Ron.  It's easy to see this isn't your first rodeo.

Do you have any plans for these babies?
