  • I'm just not right!

From the 80s...The Brandos. I couldn't get enough of the song "Gettysburg." Still love it... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CMb9Uoi0d2M

Loved it on YouTube, and picked up a live 2-CD set called "Pass the Hat" on 'bay from England.  GREAT music but the sonics are nothing to write home about.  Gotta crank it up to appreciate it.   :thumb:

Now I gotta find some studio recordings of their work.

Had several albums of Lindisfarne. Growing up in northern Indiana I listened to WXRT out of Chicago and had the opportunity to here this bands music. Need to see if I can get cd versions.
Thanks for this thread, I has been a good read thus far.

Great thread. I think I have like 85% of the albums mentioned here.

We should have an obscure rock night at GABF this year. I think Lou Hinkley would go along with this.

Two years ago, Jon Pousette-Dart was there. Live! Playing and singing.

For my contribution, maybe Chris will remember, The Good Rats

Considering the title of the thread, I’m surprised no one mentioned The Butts Band  :icon_lol:

They originated as a continuation of the Doors.  The Doors shopped around for a replacement for Jim Morrison, with Howard Wert of Audience intending to take the spot, but the band fell apart.  Robby Krieger and John Densmore went on to form The Butts Band.  I have it in my collection, courtesy of my wife (she brought it into the collection in 1977).  Very good album.

Seeing McKendree Spring listed reminded me of Pure Prairie League who made mention of McKendree Spring in the song “You’re Between Me” from their 1972 album.  I just pulled my McKendree Spring 3 album to have a look.  It is well worn.

McKendree Spring also reminded of the band Goose Creek Symphony.  I guess they could be labeled as a county-rock band, but that’s a pretty loose label.  I have not heard them in a long time, but remember them as a good time party band for down home hippies.

Was "Simply Red" a 70's or 80's band?

Ditto. For two years in college I was extra popular because I had the Tasty record after it had gone out of print. Then you could buy it again, I wanna say, 1977. I saw them only once, some club out in Suffolk County near a beach, or something. Great show.

If you like the Rats, you'll also like Crack The Sky (sorry, I've got CTS on the brain this year!)

Live Sky - it's just good stuff

How about COVEN

"They were the first band to introduce the "Sign of the Horns" to rock and pop culture as seen on their 1969 debut album release "Witchcraft".
They had a top 40 hit on Warner Bros. Records with "One Tin Soldier," written and composed by Dennis Lambert and Brian Potter which was also used as the theme song to the 1971 movie Billy Jack.
" from Wikipedia

I have the middle two albums.

Simply Red was an 80's band. They did some good stuff if you like pop music  :thumb:

The 80's was sort of a drought with the exception of pop-ish music. Here's my list of 80's music. As opposed to one hit wonders, these are the bands that I thought had [reasonably] consistent releases where most of the songs on the album were good.

Bruce Hornsby and the Range (one of my all time fav musicians)
Charlie - Fight Dirty, Lines (good mainstream popish)
Christopher Cross - Self Titled released in 79 (good mainstream pop)
Crowded House - most everything was really good stuff save the Chocolate Cake song...harrumph
Icehouse - Primitive Man
Joe Jackson - his stuff is all over the place
Level 42 - another really good pop based group. Good writing, catchy tunes
Oingo Boingo - Danny Elfman, one of a kind
Richard Marx - lotsa pop...but good
Roxy Music - though started in the 70's, my fav is Avalon and the solo effort Bete Noire
The Scorpions - major hair band
Simple Minds
Toto - though started in the 70's, they really caught on in the early 80s
Whitesnake - another good hair band

Captain Beefheart was a favorite in my younger days.
Al Kooper- solo stuff and with Bloomfield super sessions.
Traffic was always a good go to
Steve Miller prior to going commercial rock ( his blues material was quite good).
Blind Faith
Flying Burrito Brothers
Poco- early stuff

  • I don't listen to audio, I listen to music.
I cant believe I forgot this one and that they have not been mentioned yet! One of my ALL TIME favorite 80s band! "The Boomtown Rats"
I have seen them many times, met them all several times, I even got to play Simon's drums for sound check here in Minneapolis at the Orpheum theater!
I have many pictures of me and my friend partying with all of the band members and here are 2. The top one is when they first came to Minneapolis for there 1st time at the Longhorn Bar and we got to meet Bob Geldof, (It is autographed!) A great Minneapolis venue way back and long gone now and the bottom one is when me and my good friend joined them in a hotel lounge for drinks and getting wild on the bar piano after the Orpheum show. Yes, I am the short one!

Don't think I've seen any of these mentioned -
Taste/Rory Gallagher - one fine guitarist
The Flock - eclectic jazz/rock fusion group, Jerry Goodman (in their 2nd lineup) went on to do some very nice solo jazz violin work
Babe Ruth
The Blues Project - one of Al Kooper's early appearances along with Steve Katz, who went on to form the original Blood, Sweat & Tears, as well as Andy Kulberg who went on to Seatrain

Anybody hear of Paul Clinch and Choya? Had one album in the 70's that's a pop gem.
