Geddes 15" Waveguide Project

Fellas

I picked up a pair of 15" Geddes waveguides with foam plugs and B&C DE-250 drivers off of the 'Gon.

I'm planning on trying them out in my Yorkville Unity cabinets crossed to either the stock 18 Sound woofers or AE TD15X woofers at 900hz with a 48db slope on my DEQX.

Should be interesting!

Congrats. Look forward to see what you do with them.

I like Joshk's plan to put an OB mid with Geddes waveguides. Have you seen that?
Nevermind, I see you have been in that conversation...

Thanks!  I think it'll probably look like Frankenstein's monster to a certain extent...but, hey, its all about the sound, right?

If I can only get my wife to buy that.

So I see you are in the process of building the Harpers. Do you intend to use these together or anything?

How much did you pay for this combo, 15" waveguide and foam? Thanks

Tony, I will be using the Harpers for my secondary system.  The Geddes 15" / Yorkville speakers are my main rig.

I just got the Harper enclosures and drivers.  Still waiting for the crossover parts.

When drivers you mean just the DE250 not including the AE 15"? If $750 include both drivers then $750 is well priced.

I am very curious to see the outcome.  This will be interesting as it compares two heavy weights in the modern hi-efficiency design arena.  It will also be interesting as this requires running the 15" up higher in freq IIANM than with the unity config.  A real class of the titans.

Patrick Bateman (as he goes by) likes his Summas more than his unitys from what I gather from his posts.

JUBS's system should sound very good, open and dynamic.

I built a bass reflex system based on a 2-way horn(a non-Gedlee waveguide) and 10" anilco woofer(at least 10 years old) combo. The tweeter on the horn is B&C DE250compression driver. My novice system based on these drivers already sound open and dynamic, via a digital active x-over.

Jubs's system using specialized passive x-over and AE driver will further improve the sound reproduction. Enjoy.

Hey fellas

Got the waveguides.  Here are a few pics.  Sorry for the crappy quality (d@mn iphone!!  Wife has the camera).

Now I need to figure out how to best mount them in my Yorkville cabinets.  I knew the outer diameter of the waveguide would be right at the opening size previously occupied by the unity horn.  I think some sort of support for the driver side with a flat base should work.  Hmmm...now I just need to figure out how to cobble together something using readily available stuff from home depot.  Any suggestions?

I will be using some ICE monoblocks for the woofers and tubes or an F3 clone for the waveguide.  Should be pretty nice!  Just need to get the mounting worked out.

Thanks guys.

Jim,

That should be a very nice sounding system.

Out here in Denver we compared the Geddes Abbey to the Yorkville Unity and a modded set of Larger Advents.

Waveguide comparison

I, personally, loved the sound of the Yorkville woofer. The Unity waveguide had some oddities in the mids.

I will be keeping my eye on this thread to see how you like the DE250 with the Yorkvilles. I have the B&C driver which may end up with a set of QSC waveguides. I'm not sure what woofer they will be working with, yet.

Thanks for the encouragement, guys.  I'm looking forward to experimenting.

Wayne, I like the Yorkville woofer, too.  I think you had previously linked to Eighteen Sound article on building a 2-way speaker using this driver.  Looks like you can cross it at up to 2,000hz...so, I hope 900hz works well.

I'm off to Home Depot tomorrow to see what I can find to work as a stand for the waveguides.

Curious if you've gone anywhere with this?

Guys

Quick update from my side.  I FINALLY got the Yorkvilles up and running with my DEQX 2.6P.  I pulled all the passive crossover components out of the speakers and installed new Speakon connectors on the back, each connected to an individual driver.

For the tweeters, I'm using an F3 clone, the midrange drivers, a PS Audio Trio A100, and for the woofers, a Class D Audio TI chip based 300 watt / channel amp.  All amps are plugged into a DIY 3kva balanced power transformer which is in turn plugged into a Liebert double-conversion UPS (rock solid 120v output).

Anyway, the whole measurement process was easy enough (Tyson details it with pictures in his post on the DEQX) but I had to do it twice because I forgot to save it the first time.  Its really pretty cool.  After measuring, I set the crossovers for 300hz and 1250hz and let the DEQX program do its thing in producing a calibration.  I then uploaded it to the DEQX itself and let-er-rip.  Awesome to say the least!  Its been a little while since I had heard the system with the stock crossovers in place but I don't think my system has ever sounded so good.

I'm REALLY impressed!  I haven't calibrated the speakers for the room, yet, but will when I can.  For now I'm just enjoying my system.  Haven't even thought about the Geddes waveguides....yet.....

Jim,

I built some Abbeys using the original waveguides - fibreglass, the same as your 15 inch. One of the things that Earl recommends is to use an expanding foam spray - the denser the better - which you spray onto the rear of the waveguide once you have it installed in the baffle. I tried to create a cylinder of cardboard round the waveguide to contain the foam as it is expanding - it worked to a certain extent - it would have been better with a second pair of hands. One important thing to remember is that once the waveguide is mounted it is permanently attached to the baffle - Earl recommends a lot of resin to hold and seal the waveguides.

Have you read the posts regarding mounting the waveguides in the baffle? If not I will try to find them.

Most people buying the kits will have the newer, thicker waveguides already installed so they do not have any such problem!

I read the link to the shootout and I agree with the description of the Abbey sound, it seems to me that a little more energy is needed with the bass unit. I have been using a Gainclone (Peter Daniels) to drive the Abbey's but having built some Nelson Pass F5's the sound has improved quite a bit. Given that you will be using a different bass unit and ICE monos for the these units then that should not be problem.

I know nothing of those other speakers / drive units - my appetite has been whetted - but I will have to finish building my KHorns before attempting anything else.

Good luck - whenever you decide to install the waveguides.

Any update here?

I've been playing with tweeter response above 10khz, specifically flat to 20khz vs. various levels of roll-off above 15khz.

Haven't bothered with the Geddes waveguides - liking the Unity horns too much.

Ok, another idea for these...F!  Why can't I leave well enough alone??  :duh:

I'm going to use B&O ICE amplifier modules for the woofer (1000ASP) and midrange (250ASP) drivers, inside each of the cabinets.

I'm going to have the tweeter switchable between my F3 clone and E-linear tube amps with separate DEQX profiles for each - fairly big gain difference between these two.

I like the idea of the cleaner install and the ability to use different tweeter amps depending on my mood.

900hz wouldn't work here - B&C DE 250 is specified as 1k-18k with recommended crossover freq of 1.6k

you would need a bass driver capable of going much higher - quite a difficult task - something like 20hz-2k or so.....

:)
