I miss my buffer already...it's only been 5hrs.  I plugged another piece in so I could listen and OMG.   :nono:  This isn't working...so bad I shut it down.   :duh:

Can't wait for the upgraded buffer to come back.  Make it happen Gary! :thumb: :green:
Jason,
Have you moved back to your monos or are you still running the ClassD?

Ed

Got the monos hooked up now....Class D is getting "rebuilt" with the IR board and case.

Would one of you guys who currently own the buffer please give me a width and thickness measurement of the faceplate.  I am building an enclosure for a amp and I would like to build a matching case for it.  It will be a bit taller but I can match width.

Thanks,
Ed
Mine is 8-15/16" x 3-15/16" x 3/4".  The corner roundovers are 3/16" and the face and back roundovers are 1/8"...ish... they've been sanded a bit.

BTW.  I feel for Jason and his withdrawal symptoms.

Gents,
Sorry to hit you up for dimensions again but I am getting ready to build a box for my amp and I want to ensure it will match nicely with the Dodd Buffer.  Dave has given me the dimensions of the faceplate but I want to make certain I have the dimensions of the box correct as I plan to stack them.  Gary's website says the dimensions are 9"x8"x4", is this inclusive of the faceplate? That would make the box 9"(actually probably a 1/4" less as the faceplate is a bit wider than the box)x7.25"x4", is this accurate?

edit: I am looking for the backbox measurements minus any connector lengths or faceplate.

Thanks,
Ed

You might ask Gary if he can sell you a blank chassis. They'd match for sure then.

Thanks Danny, I considered it.  Unfortunately the amp I am building will not fit in the chassis Gary is using.  I will be able to match the width and the depth but the box I am building will be 5.5" tall.

Ed

No worries, my chassis height is different anyway.

Thanks again.

Ed,

7-1/2" deep x 8-5/8" wide x 3-1/2 tall - metal enclosure dimensions only.

I like Danny's idea.

Thanks again Dave.  I like Danny's idea as well, unfortunately there is no way I can get this amp to fit in that chassis, I have to go taller to mount the boards vertically.

Ed

Anyone compared the buffer with dodd battery pre?
Are there any sonic differences (not gain related) - does the buffer lack in anyway - drive / dynamics of the battery pre.

Thanks
Sunil.

A birdie told me that the buffer was actually better.  I'm sure Gary would be the best to answer this question though.

Gary?

I can answer this question. There are 3 differences between the preamp and the buffer.
1. the buffer has no HT bypass, the preamp does.
2. The buffer has a set of fixed outs, the preamp doesn't
3. The buffer has NO gain, the preamp has 16db of gain
Now for the sonic differences. Danny and I both have a-b'd between the pre and the buffer, him in his system and myself in my system. We both found that if you use the same tubes in each device that they sound exactly the same, neither of us could detect any differences. I personally like the buffer due to the wide range of use with the volume control, but on the days when I need Chinese drums at 115db levels, I must use the preamp! So in this case I cannot say 1 is better than the other. It's more like both are wonderful which 1 do I want! :eyebrows:

I bought the Pre over the buffer for the HT bypass and the dB of gain.  My modified Squeezebox doesn't have enough gain.

Now, to find some used Dodd amps, and I'll be all set!
