2. The buffer has a set of fixed outs, the preamp doesn't
Gary, are you stating that the second set of outputs are not controlled by the volume control?

No, both sets of outputs are volume controlled, but it also has a set of fixed outs labeled as rec out. They are for headphone amps and recording anything

Thanks Gary, I didn't realize there were more than two sets of outputs.

So the moral of the story is purchase a Buffer or Pre and you'll be happy.   I did and you can too.

Let me know if you have them in two months.  Right now, I'm transitioning to a different pay system, and I don't get paid for the next two months (then get paid for all of March).  Also, my listening room is still at the stud stage, and won't be ready for another two months.

So how are you guys incorporating this unit into your systems?  Preamp processing or between a source and your amps?

Yes, between source and amps.

Don't you mean between the source and the preamp/processor?

Nope.  I'm running from a DAC > Buffer > amp.  Sounds incredibly transparent.

I don't need no stinkin' preamp!!!   :green:

But wouldn't you say you're an exception to what's the norm for most systems Dave? Afterall, you are a most exceptional individual.  :thumb:

I don't think that most systems really need gain to function well.  Where purely passive volume controls fall short is their inability to supply current to the amp and drive reactive loads like cables.  The buffer has plenty of oomph to do all of this.  Of course I am talking strictly 2 channel not A/V.

Exceptional can be either good or bad, so I'd say that you are correct in your estimation of me.   :o

No sir.  Wavelength Crimson DAC > Dodd Buffer > Clayton M-300 amps

It's awesome!!!   :green:

You've been nothing short of exceptionally good to me Dave and that's the only way I see it and meant it(along with trying to be funny).  :thumb:  And I'm not disagreeing with your perception of preamps either. I was just generalizing about the setup of most systems out there and whether the Dodd Buffer is most useful between the source and a premap/processor or between the preamp/processor and the amp(s)? I pretty much listen to anything you have to say with many many  many grains of salt Dave.  8)

Why would you want to use a preamp and the buffer?
