I am using Salamander rack.  It's cheaper than most racks out there and you can hide your components.  My wife likes it.

Levi,

what about ventilation? do you leave the doors open while the equipment is in use?

btw, i like the "hiding" of electronics...

Hi Al, the back of the Salamander rack is open.  The doors are perforated so it is has good ventilation.

Just because my tube preamp runs extremely hot, I made my own 70mm computer fans and mount it in the back.  Also, Salamander sells fans for the rear if you are not into diy.

I also have the salamander cabinet...Sedona I think.  The back can be open or with fans, also the bottom shelf's have slots in them to aid in cooling.  I believe that you can also get slotted shelves to replace the solid mid and upper shelf.  It can be configured almost anyway you want and there are a batch of accessories you can also get, like lighting, fans, different feet, perforated doors and sides or no doors, additional shelves, plus it is a well built nice looking piece of furniture with  3 - 4 different styles.  True it doesn't have the resonance damping or the esoteric look and associated price tag, but it is a handsome piece of furniture and a good way to set off the minimalistic  design of the Bryston gear.  No, I don't own any Salamander stock!

Well
until I get the new racks...I needed a way to get the gear off the floor.

So, I took the hacksaw to my old stand :o

Looks kinda neat, actually :D

Keith,

the center speaker is located in the very back...does it work proper?

Thank you for the vintage McIntosh complement.  :) I use it sparingly and even if I want to hide it, there are no more space in the rack!

The rack is walnut with walnut perforated steel doors and walnut sides.

Good one

It's not even hooked up in the pic. It will be installed above the TV, on it's own shelf

Because if instead it's placed below the TV, it will be more in line with the left and right speakers and closer to ear level.

Yes ideally the center speaker mid&tweeter would be at same elevation as left/rights.  Immediately below TV would be ideal in the setup pictured.

*edit for better grammar

Then I guess I'll just have to get my ears raised

We all know what the 'optimum' setup would be. But, it's all about trade-offs from time to time.

For 7 years the centre channel was well above the plane of the LR fronts as it sat atop a massive rear projection TX. It was angled down towards me.

Sounded great....the plan was to put the centre channel below the TV....but created other problems with audio racks, cabling, etc.

So, as far as 'Not a good idea goes".........no merit in that one for me

Putting it below the TV is still not 100% ruled out, but it would change the path I've chosen for audio racks and requires many new cables

That is why the rack in the center does not work for you. You can raise the L and R speakers so thay are inline with the center channel. :thumb:  problem solved!
