Now I Need A New Rack!
« on: 29 Sep 2009, 09:00 pm »
I used to have a 50" Projction TV (translate...MASSIVE), so I picked up a 50" Kuro this weekend.

I always had my gear in the corner due to the size of the old TV..but now I need a new rack!

Not too easy to find locally :D

Hi Keith, don't know what kinda rack your looking for,I have been using QUEST.
They are solid MDF,shelf posts are steel and thread into each other,so you can make them as 1-2 shelves or as high as you want.,(lockable wheels also)
You can get them over the net.Mine I got in Edmonton Audio 5.1.
If memory is correct 170.00 buys you a 4 shelf unit.
I have a 175 lb.torus and a 75 lb. Torus on one rack with no problems,and she's
pretty easy to move in and out as the Torus(s) are EVIL to lift.

That would be the Bryston SP 1.7  :o

I'm using that as a 2-channel preamp as well. funny, the brochure for the new preamp I'm getting is actually on the ottoman in the pic!

That may be an option. I started to look at some high-end stuff (Solid Tech Rack of Silence, Radius, etc), but that a lot of $$ for audio racks.

I can access Plateau locally...but that's about it. I check out the Qwest.

I knew you would post something like this 8) I saw you had the monoblock stands in one of your earlier pics.

Very sharp looking indeed....

Hmmm, maybe I can scrap the new preamp and get a couple racks!

Thanks James.....I think

That's what I figured there abouts. That would look good, three of those up front
and a 55"LCD up above on the wall.

If I'm taking the thread off course, I appologize.  I think it's relevent and may make a difference...

James,

Other than for heat dissipation and physically holding the weight of the components, have you heard any differences between racks?  I'm not talking measurements that'll drive your engineers crazy, I'm just talking opinion.  Kind of like component warm-up.

What do you look for in a rack, other than ventilation, weight capacity, and aesthetics?

I've been contemplating a rack change, but I'd rather save the cash and buy a new component like a BDA-1.  I'll hold off on a rack until I buy a house that'll be home for the long haul.

I bought these from Andy at HHG Stands www.hhgstands.com, totally custom walnut/bird's eye maple, granite.  Sorry my photos are lousy, but his stands are beautiful in the flesh and very functional.

Might I suggest an interim solution?

Go to your local building supply center and purchase "audiophile" quality, concrete building blocks. These concrete blocks are a bargain at $317.23 each as they are sonically treated to produce superior audio results compared to the regular $1.73 "non-audiophile" grade concrete blocks.

Truly worth an audition...

There are two types of vibration in most audio systems - Mechanical and Acoustical. Tube gear is generally more susceptible to this micro-phonic vibration and transistor gear less so.

'Mechanical' interference is created by the speakers vibrating in their enclosure and the energy from the enclosure transferring through the floor and up into your amplifiers and source gear. A good example of this is to think about your turntable - step or jump on the floor in just the right place and the stylus skips on the record.

'Acoustical' interference is the vibrations through the air caused by the speakers radiating sound waves throughout the room. The theory as I understand it behind component stands is to try and reduce these affects as best they can.  Some do it through mass and some thorough isolation.

James

PS- buy the BDA-1
