I am of the opinion that the differences between a good and a great tube amp is in the iron that it uses.  Airtight uses really premium Japanese iron (Tamura iirc) which has a huge beneficial impact.  They are expensive, but you are getting your money's worth.

I've seen integrateds by Airtight, so I know they exist.  That would probably be #1 on my short list.

I was curious, so I looked them up.  Seems I took the knobs on the front (of ATM-1 & 2) to mean it was an integrated.  Here is what they say,

"There are even two sets of inputs, allowing you to use a line-level source, i.e., CD player, directly into the amplifier using the amps left and right attenuators for level control."

So not really a full featured integrated but still can be used like one.

Maybe add a placette for VC.

Hmmmmm......doesn't that mean I'd be going passive?

Don't know that I want to do that.

JoshK

Well most tube integrateds are just amps with a passive section.  Typically the only thing that really differentiates a purposesly designed integrated is the gain.   If you design the amp to have enough gain to be driven directly from the CD's output then all you need is source selection and VC.  I've rarely seen an extra stage added (some suboptimal chinese amps I have) and anyway, that would just add unnecessary noise/distortion.

John,

you may want to reach out to Gary Dodd as he appears to have a battery powered integrated in the works.  The battery powered amp he is currently selling is supposed to sound sublime and it's only going for $995.00 and at that price you may be able to keep the Airtight.   I've heard John's set up played through his Spendors (when he had them) and through my own speakers and the Dodds and  Airtight sure made a great combo.

Hi Ken...thanks for the head's up and the nice words.   I'm sure that Dodd amp is real nice, but I just don't think 15wpc is gonna cut it with my speakers!       :?

They are fairly sensitive at 91 db, and not a particularly tough load, but controlling the 10 inch woofer to really get out of them what is on offer, is the problem.

Dodd amps are SOLD

Parting is such sweet sorrow.

The other thing I didn't realize when I mentioned the Airtight amp was the asking.  Holy cow!  I thought they were ~$5k msrp and expensive at that.  $13K for a PP KT88 amp?  Whoa.  For that kinda coin, I'd commission Josh Stippich to design you a custom integrated that doubles as art.

Audiomat ....Nice!
Reported to just ooze emotion and musicality.

Another piece of kit that has intrigued me and been on my "must try" list for years!

Anybody know the power output?   Remote?
the audiomat website linked in the a/a ad tells all - 30wpc.  the retail $4.9k iteration has no remote, the $8.9k model does.

curious, what is your goal in downsizing?  saving money?  saving space?  your rig looks so nice in the pics...

In all seriousness, you might call Gary Dodd after the RMAF.  He might work up an integrated based on his new battery amp.  I talked to Danny Richie a couple of days ago and he is having Gary work up a higher powered version of the new amp.  Chances are you could actually move up in sound for the $ you got for your pair of Dodd mono's.   Just a thought.

I'm quite intriqued myself with the Dodd battery powered amps but I would definitely want to hear one first before making a decision. I know there's the issue with the batteries but I was just wondering  if Gary might consider  sending one of these out on tour for anyone who may be interested in hearing the world's first battery powered tube amp :thumb:
