You know you are getting old when..........
« on: 6 Sep 2009, 02:26 pm »
....you are walking toward the Fabulous Fox theater for the final concert of the Moody Blues summer concert tour, and mournful-looking 60-somethings line the sidewalks saying "Got any spare tickets?  Got an extra ticket?"

The show was great but the sound quality was only fair, especially the lead vocals.  When Justin Hayward did an acoustic-style solo, the top end was there, but in the big numbers it was drowned out.  I guess they figure "what the hell, they're all going deaf anyway".

My wife works in the entertainment industry and knows sound well.  She says that every sound guy she even met was deaf as a post.     :?

Hey brick, I know what you mean. Its sort of funny, the shows my wife and I are interested in seeing are simply filled with old farts (like us). That's OK though, if it wasn't for our generation the no talent, new groups the kids all seem to clamor for wouldn't have any music to reprise and re-record. Right or wrong, I've just about convinced myself that their statements of "paying homage" to their prior generations of musicians is nothing more than a veiled admission that they have nothing to contribute musically.

...and your wife is right, the vast majority of sound guys are stone deaf. They wouldn't know the sound of real instruments if somebody beat them over the head with one. Its a shame, these guys running the boards only seem to think that louder is better. We actually saw James Taylor (don't beat me up too bad of that choice) our at Riverport a couple of years ago. As we all know, JT is a balladeer. His music is best served up at moderate volumes. Not according to the guys running the boards. They had him cracked to the point of clipping and severe distortion. This is exactly why we never take in a show without taking our ear plugs for protection. Sure, it muffles the sound but it makes the event much more pleasurable.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, we've seen a number of shows that have had very good sound. Some that come to mind are Pat Metheny (or any Jazz concert for that matter), Blue Man Group, Johnny Lang, Eric Clapton (most of the times we've seen him), Keb Mo, plus a number of others in smaller venues. A large portion of the big named acts (Rush and Hagar come to mind) have generally poor sound IMO. Not sure if its the guys behind the board or that the groups are using the less than optimal house sound systems we have here in town.

Yeah, and we sat next to a 30-something school teacher who said when she told her students that she was going to see the Moody Blues, they said "So's my grandfather!"

Little bastards. :nono:

....when you turn on the radio and most of so called music sounds like noise...

....when you find yourself listening to more and more classical music...

....when the bands you considered modern or the epitomy of cool are in the "classic" bins priced at 4 for 10.

I saw the Moodys here in Minnesota at an outdoor theater. They are getting old, but that last time I looked, so was I.

What about people who think their only song is Nights In White Satin?  Too old? Too young?  Or what if you get the Moody Blues and Blue Oyster Cult confused?

You know you're getting old when you have to hide your bong from your parents - and your kids.

I already do all those things at  25, I must be old on the inside.  My mom called me an old man yesterday though, perhaps she was right.

This thread is going to help me finish my night at work.

When your kids are turning you on to more underground music than your peers, excepting A/C of course.

...you grew up listening to Cream, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath & CCR, and now you listen to a lot of Wingy Manone & His Orchestra, Andy Kirk & His 12 Clouds of Joy, and the Frankie Trumbauer Orchestra.

Midnight?  My wife and I were watching the new prime time Jay Leno show and fell asleep during that.  Of course, that may just be conditioning considering the hundreds of times I have fallen asleep to his show before.

You know you are getting old when.......you are at a concert with kids who are not as old as an old pair of speakers in your closet. (from college)
