I've heard from some friends with pretty reliable ears and pretty high end headphone rigs that the HD 800 are the real deal and may compete and/or be better than the R10, Qualia and HE90.  I have a pair on order so will know hopefully by March.

Chris,

Nice find!  Wonder if they'll have a trade-up program :D

I've been thinking about the Denon 5000s, but I'm going to have to hear these first.

Anybody know what the impedance is?

Yes, they are.  I think they will be the newest addition to my headphone stable.  From the little I was able to listen to them, they seem comparable to my Ultrasone ED9's.  I can't wait to hear the HD800's on a good amp.

Reading some of the reports from this years CES, seems Sennheiser has a very good new product..... the HD 800...... 8)

I head from a few people that these headphones are simply stunning

Different price range, the HD800's are going to be around $1400.   Impedance is 300 ohms.

Umm, I mean the 7000s.  I thought those were much closer to the HD-800s.  Not cheap in either case.

Denon AHD7000's are really nice sounding, beautifully made and closer in price to the HD800's as they retail for $999.

Make sure to check out the Limited edition Ultrasone ED9's as well, there were 10 new sets left in the US two days ago, down from 30 two days before that.  Also, the new Ultrasone ED8 was really comfortable and seemed to sound quite good when I demo'd it their room a few days ago.

Disclaimer--I don't offer any Ultrasone products for sale.  I also don't offer the Denon AHD7000's or Sennheiser HD800's for sale.

Peace,

Lee

This is the first I've heard anyone compare the HD 800 to the ED9's.  I've ordered the HD800 and would not be happy if they sound like the ED9, which I've owned.  To me, the ED9's were unnatural sounding with an overemphasis in the bottom end.  I've read that the HD 800 were closer to a Qualia 010 with more extension on the bottom end.  They've been described as fast like you would expect from a e'stat headphone.  A few have described them as perhaps the best headphone they've heard and this is coming from people that either own or have heard the Sennheiser HE90, Sony R10 and Sony Qualia.  Don't get me wrong, we all hear different and like different things from our gear so I respect your findings.  I just hope I don't have the same reaction. :)

The ED9's take FOREVER to burn in, I would guesstimate 500+ hours.  And, they need a crazy good amp, or they can indeed sound boomy and unnatural.  Plus, the stock cable provided with the 9's, is, in a word, awful.  So, I can understand where you are coming from.

Sennheiser had the HD800's driven by a Benchmark, which I am familiar with and the sound was very good.  Heck, I was impressed enough with them to take 25+ pictures of them and tell anyone who would listen that they should go hear them.  In fact, the DEQX guys who were sharing my demo room kept kidding me about my new "love affair" with the HD800's as I wouldn't shut up about them... :duh:

However, I, personally, hesitate to make any blanket statements about how good they are in absolute terms as I listened to them under unfamiliar circumstances, with a great deal of activity around me, so I need to hear them in quiet surroundings, driven by a truly *great* amp before I would say they are as good as a set R10's, HE90's, ED9's, or a top end Stax.  I hope they are, I have pre-ordered a set...

Peace,

Lee

The maggie demonstration was very impressive, almost as impressive as the VMPS live/demo in a large ballroom.  I've spent considerable time privately auditioning both the 20.1 and 3.6 at several dealers . . . and I'm surprised to report that what I heard bested both of those!  I thought they were going to draw back the curtain and show us something like a double 20.1 . . . the sound staging was excellent, the drum track sounded exactly like a drum kit (I've lived with one in my home for several years), base was tight and deep, and I detected no flaw.  A seamless presentation.  The diminutive mid/tweeter pannel (less than a foot square) was impressive.  My wife loved the subwoofers with thick glass top.  Definite WAF winner.

I think Magnepan now has a serious problem:  the 20.1 and 3.6 are now obsolete.  And they have an opportunity to make a serious inroad into the home theater market if they can standardize reasonably optimal placement instructions.  The panels were a couple feet away from the side walls, but the subwoofers were close to the walls, and not quite perpendicular to the side walls and a foot or more in front of the stand or table the panels were on.  That shouldn't be too hard to duplicate in a home theater.

Yes, I heard Pass' new speaker.  It was definitely better than their last one released a couple years back.  I didn't care for it at all -- could have been breakin and show conditions for it then, but even so it seemed grossly overpriced for what I heard.  The new speaker was a better performer, smoother through the bass to mid and into the treble.  But it wasn't a stand out in any way that would make me want to audition it further.

Sorry, but what speaker are you talking about?

Any information from CES 2009 concerning new loudspeaker driver components from SB Acoustics, Seas, Vifa, etc?
