MGM's collector's sets have also been labeled along with Sony Pictures logo which wasn't always the case. All of the sets I've purchased under MGM logo are that way lately. Otherwise, MGM has put out very few collector sets on their own behalf. Wonder what is up? Probably, they are not willing to do the restoration work on their own.

Additionally, I always wondered how Warner has gotten a hold of all the MGM classics from yesterday. Especially, some of the classic musicals that were original MGM releases and now are released on DVD under Warner's label. Sometimes the MGM logo will appear before the movie, but will be a Warner release. I wonder if there will be any studios left standing on their own?

Sony bought MGM a year ago or so if I recall. Which is why Casino Royale was released as a Columbia film rather than an MGM film. But Sony didn't get the rights to the old MGM Classics, Warner did. Had sounded a bit odd to me when I heard of it. Guess Sony didn't think they could make enough $ off the classics to justify the cost.

Thanks, that clears up some w(o)anderings for me now. I thought Sony was tied in with Columbia, but didn't know about the MGM deal. Maybe Sony will put some more into some of MGM titles. I wouldn't mind seeing the classic "Moby Dick" come out all polished up and restored as a collector's title. But, I heard that the Gregory Peck family has some sort of strange strangle hold on this film, somehow, and are hindering its release.

It's classic!

Put "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind"  High on your "to watch" list!

I think you're right. This movie is classic and will probably become one, if it hasn't already. I thought it was a well thought out film. It contained all the fixins' that make for a good movie. It was the first time I saw it and it strangely reminded me of a cross between a Farrelly brothers and a P.T. Anderson film.

Picked up The Chumscrubber yesterday as I finally found a place that had a copy that wasn't asking $30 for it.

And seeing how it grossed all of $49,526 in theaters, I'm sure none of you have heard of it. I actually did catch it in theaters though, it's one of the lowest grossing movies I've ever seen in a theater. I think there were two ofther guys in the theaters when I saw it.

The Departed.  Somewhat disappointed in it, although it was worth watching.

I purchased the Illusionist.  It was a fairly slow film with relatively few sets and not much eye candy.  If you were patient with it, I thought it proved to be an entertaining film.  It would have helped if I had never seen The Usual Suspects.  They had similar endings so I saw the ending coming way ahead of time.  Normally, I can turn off the critical part of my brain off and I don't try to analyze the film as I watch it.  Since the film moved a bit slow, I had my "figure it out before the movie ends" mode engaged.  Most thrillers/mystery films aren't thrilling or mysterious to me since I can usually figure the entire plotline by the end of the first 30 minutes.

I wish that I didn't do that, since it "ruins" it for me.  If you only watch contemporary films, then you don't have the, "been there, seen that before," jaded feeling.  I have tended to watch older films and non-American cinema for the last year, if I have the chance.  The US film industry knows how to make a positively wonderful looking movie.  I just wish they lifted the well written stories ethic from some of the better French (?) and Japanese films.  I don't mean to bash Hollywood, but the plots have become rather generic and uninteresting.  Whew, I went way off task with this paragraph.  Sorry about that.

"The Chase" Good flick, all comes together towards the end. Not a chick flick. Not an action movie either, but they do manage to blow a few things up.  aa

Pieces of april,

Could be a chick flick,   so what!!!!!!  Don't be put by the fact Katie holmes is in it, She really surprised me with this convincing and subtle performance .  The music is quite good, done  by a member of the magnetic fields.

IMDB Plot outline:

A wayward daughter invites her dying mother and the rest of her estranged family to her apartment for Thanksgiving dinner.

Well the only titles that I’ve added to the crammed up DVD bookcase is “Demolition Man” (1992) “Forbidden Planet” (1956) and a STAR TREK original TV episode.

“Demolition Man” (1993) was a loud film when called for during the museum sequence LFE.1 cutting in now and then adding huge impact to reinforce the scene or demolish the room around my ears!

This was a rather laidback kinder film for me where I can watch and relax without the room going into demolition mode. :green:

Just picked up The Sentinel and 16 Blocks each for £7.00 that’s ASDA price! I saw the films several months back on rental and rather enjoyed the Dolby film mix so I’ll try them out later on the new active JBL three-way three-screen matching system to see how they perform second time around.

I bought the special edition of 300. Great extra features, like in King Arthur with Clive Owen.  I also picked up The Prestige.

Little out of step here cause I haven't seen either of these in a long time but neither have you.  Peter Cook and Dudley Moore in Bedazzled and The Wrong Box.  I only mention them cause they're great and to send up a rave to anybody who knows it.  What new releases on DVD are worth a spit cept for Knocked Up?

Bought L.A. Confidential to look at on my new tube.  The hi-def picture is great and the writing in this movie is superb.  All the threads running along in this and how they merge is brilliant.  Bought Master and Commander, too, for the picture.  A lot of video reviewers use this a lot for one reason or another.  Very Good movie, IMO, tho perhaps more sentimental than need be.  Very good editing and the sets were superb.  I guess they filmed the fog and storm sequences in a tank but you'll be hard pressed to tell.  All the sets, really.  Two masterpieces of sorts, IMO.

BTW, anybody remember a movie from the 60's directed by John Milius called Any Wednesday?

Here's a trivia question- who and in what movie said: "it's been emotional."?

Cheers.

 Oh yes, I have seen both wthin the last year...and both when they came out in original theatrical release! :D

Another fan of Bedazzled and The Wrong Box here...great casts in both, including a very young Michael Caine in TWB...highly entertaining score too. I was lucky enough to see PC & DM live on stage with their touring show "Good Evening" way back when...the whole night was a lauch til you hurt experience. Even the visual of the tall Cook and tiny Moore walking out onstage (before a word was uttered) was hilarious. These two movies are old favorites.

Jim, I agree with you, both LA Confidential and Master & Commander are superb films, about as good as commercial movies get. I've always loved LA/C and never tire of watching it - well written and a tremendous cast.

I'm a huge fan of Patrick O'Brien's Aubrey/Maturin novels and think Weir did an outstanding job of capturing the spirit and essence of the books on screen. IMO, M&C is the best "tall ship" movie ever made. (Not that there's much competition, and I don't think it was too sentimental at all - it quite captures the zeitgeist od age quite well.)

As outstanding as the cinematogrpahy is in this movie (and quite the test for shadow detail and blacks), I think many reviewers use M&C as a demo film for its astounding soundtrack - tremendous dynamic range, and one of the most complex, detailed and immersive soundscapes in movie history. It's not just the booms of cannons and the whine of cannonballs and  crack of splinters; it's also all the subtle ambient sounds of life on board a 19th century sailing vessel that make you feel as if you are really there.

The majority of the scenes "on deck" or in the rigging were shot in the same Mexican tank Jim Cameron used for Titanic. The tank is positioned so that it's near enough the actual ocean that with the right camera angles the rim disappears into the horion line. The masts and rigging just went so high - a lot was added digitally (as was fog, light, clouds etc.) A lot of the scenes with both ships in view (including the battle scenes) were done by Weta digital on tanks with very large (and beautifully detailed) miniatures.

But the cool part of this film is that it doesn't look like digital FX - the CGI was used to make the film more realistic, and to swoop in angles and perspectives on the minitatures to capture POVs you couldn't shoot IRL.

The stunning storm footage of raging seas was actually shot by a 2nd unit crew on board a Captain Cook commemorative voyage around the tip of South America - the shots were taken from a real square masted ship of an actual storm in the geographical location it was supposed to be. That footage was later digitally married to the footage shot in the tank. I remember the first time I saw M&C in a theater, I was stunned at how realistic (and frightening) the storm waves looked (I've been in storms at sea). Turns out it looked real because it was real.

Be sure you check out the extras fo M&C.
