chuck, unfortunately, yure mistaken here.  most *normal* folk *do* enjoy looking at car wrecks.  ya may tink it's perverse, ya may not like it - that's ok, suit yourself; but it *IS* normal.  which is why there is *always* a traffic back up when there is a wreck alongside the road, even if all lanes are clear.  even if/when there are *six* lanes clear for traffic to get by.  even if the wreck is on the *other* side of the highway.  amhik... :o

Oh, how do you know that?  You say you 'can't judge a book by its cover' but yet you can judge an audio system without hearing it?  Now who's doing the judging?

Hi Chuck,
Welcome back from your hiatus.

Since you're a teacher of repute, I'm sure we can all learn from your expertise.

As far as learning aids go, a picture tells a thousand words.

Could you please post all your pictures again?  They will serve as valuable learning tools for all those looking to enter the world of "high end".Thank you for your kind words. It seems  there are two camps here regarding these pics .SOSO Dana calls them a freak show .Marbles
calls them a car wreck.Kidding aside ,what is your opinion?

Regards,
TCO

Speaker placement ,lack of mass loading, ceilings untreated ,wires not damped ,no resonators etc.etc.Im losing patience with you .You need
to become aware of your limitations. You have no musical knowledge ,taste,or talent, yet you never stop
running your mouth.

Nathan,

I can't say how a system will sound from looking at a picture, but those two setups have limitations that in the end will take a decent chunk of their overall potential.  The good thing is that is not expensive at all to correct them.  For example, the first system is using the RPG ProFoam panels lopsided.  They are designed for vertical use and in my system I've found that when the velcros on my side panels came loose and I had to lean them against the wall there was a significant loss in imaging.  That was an eye opening experience for me.  Also, the equipment should not be placed between the speakers.  Those RPG Skyline diffusors are $249.00 each.  Why place the equipment between the speakers?  Do the math on those diffusors.  The equipment should be further behind the speakers (if at all).  The rack used is a flexi-rack style, violating one of the basics of resonance control: the equipment shelf must not be an integral part of the rack's structure.  When those speakers and subs are going full blast the system will not sound at its best because of vibration.  There's other aspects like wire damping, but Chuck already got into that.  For the record, I was working with a couple of my buddies on wire damping before Chuck ever posted his gallery/shrine.

Thanks,Hi, I use Michelin Tires on my 240SX.They are
the best you can get.

this statement is totally meaningless, especially in the context of hantra's question.  best for what?  handling?  wear?  comfortable ride?  noise?  for performance, i prefer kumho, yokohama, bridgestone, at any price point.  i don't really care about noise/comfort/wear issues.  my daily ride, an '86 alfa gtv6, tweeked for performance w/suspension & engine/driveline mods, doesn't even have a radio.  if i want music, i yust use my right foot!   of course, my daily commute is only 90-100 miles, so who cares about comfort?

hantra, to answer *your* question, speed-rated tires, like yer z-rated ones, & wide, low-profile tires, will be the noisiest, regardless of brand.  if ya really want quiet, go to a v-rated, or even an h-rated tire, & consider getting one w/a narrower tread, & higher profile - exactly the opposite of a performance mod.  ie: a stock 225-50-15 has a "+1" performance option of 245-45-16 - basically the same rolling diameter, it will give better handling, w/o effecting speedo readings - at the expense of a stiffer, noisier ride.  going to 185-70-14 will have the opposite effect - quieter, smoother ride at the expense of handling.  the trick is to pick what's right for you.  w/in any given size, places like the tire rack http://www.tirerack.com/ have subjective reviews of tires, where factors like noise are rated...

Ahh now I see... So you expect us to accept at face value that by virtue of the tweaks you have performed that your system (or photographs of such) is de facto superior than anyone elses, no actual listening to the system in question required?!  Right.  That makes perfect sense. :rotflmao:  You can tell the sound of something by looking at it!  Wow, are you an X-Man with supernatural powers or something? Cool!

Chuck have I ever said your stereo system sounds bad?  Has anyone else?  Quote the offending text if you can find it.  I've been illustrating my points on the subjects at hand without directly attacking you or your system and you respond with this type of nonsense?  Have we ever met Chuck?  No.  So how can you possibly be in any position to make such accusations?  I really couldn't care less what some half-ass grade school substitute teacher thinks of me.  Like they say: Those who cannot do, teach.  From reading some of your posts I can't tell if you TEACH fourth graders or you ARE a fourth grader yourself.  Maybe you should have one of your star pupils proofread the inane blather you post over the internet.  It would help support the illusion of you being a super genious.  If your posts were a homework assignment I get the feeling they would be full of red marks.

Chuck Josephon telling people they have no taste - now THAT'S what the word irony was CREATED for! :rotflmao: :rotflmao: :rotflmao:

Chuck I sincerely think you are a cool, one of a kind old guy who does his own thing; I knew that from the first time I saw your pics.  But instead of being cool about it you chose to be an asshole and insult people.  That's a shame, but oh well...I hope you are enjoying being a laughing stock.  Please do post more images of 'damped wires' and rusty barbells so we can all have another healthy gut laugh at your expense.  That is why you came here, right?

Like they say: Those who cannot do, teach...

You know Nathan; you may be onto something here.  I've been following these threads mostly because of the sometimes humorous content and for sure because of the sheer spectacle of Chuck's pictures.

But as far as real educational content from Chuck, it's been sorely lacking.  Someone asks a question about damping the insides of cabinets and you gave a suggestion - which is great - but the suggestion was to hang weights from the speakers, with rope if you're worried the chains will scratch the finish.  I think it's become pretty obvious that Chuck is just living what he's used to.  From my experience (and that of others I know) the education system rarely translates well into actual practice.  In this case Chuck's living in his education lab which is clearly pretty far removed from most of our reality simply based on the 40k+ hits his pictures have gotten.  People see it as a freak show Chuck, like it or not.  So, no matter that your system sounds 500% better than those in the pictures Nathan posted, almost 100% of us would take ANY ONE of those rooms over your room.  Why?  Because we also HAVE TO LIVE IN THAT ROOM!  Few if any of us could fathom living in or entertaining in a room that was as "tweaked" as yours.  It would be like living in the "Honey I Shrunk the Kids" house or Doc Brown's (from Back to the Future).  Those places, and yours, serve a different purpose and become, for lack of a better term, a lab.

For me this hobby is about compromise.  Sure, I could have the best preamp on the planet, but then what would I drive to work?  I could spend 20,000 on speakers but how would I eat the rest of the year?  Just because we all aren't willing to convert our living space into an educational proving ground doesn't mean we aren't willing to learn and try and fit some of what you've apparently accomplished into a format that we can live with.  However, again as is pretty typical, the teacher is either consciously or unconsciously so out of touch their message is lost because it can't be translated into something that is usable in the real world.  There is no way I'm hanging weights from my speakers, stapling all my cables to a board or hanging hemholz resonators all over my room like so many fly strips.  If my system will never reach it's potential as a result then so be it, that's a choice I'm making.  It doesn't mean I'm not willing to learn what you've done and do what you can't; which is try and apply some of these techniques for my real world.

It's a damn shame that rather than coming here and strutting around with your chest all puffed up like your looking for a mate proclaiming to be the executioner of all that vibrates you couldn't rather have listened, taken questions and tried to apply your theories to the real world solutions people need.  You're either not wired that way and it's impossible for you to do or you're the best troll ever to hit Audio Circle.  Either way your rhetoric is getting tired.

So true!  You've definitely got far more 'hits' on your gallery than mine or anyone elses, that nobody can deny.  However, to correlate "viewing" with "respect of ideas" is...well, how shall I put this...  I don't really concern myself with such popularity contests as you do.  The pictures are there for anyone who wants to look or not look at them.

Dammit I spent an hour on this answer and I lost my connection .Firstly ,in the first thread Tweaking I offered
many of my tweaks such as wire damping ,resonators,
baffles ,ceiling treatment, speaker placement  bass traps and much more.Forget the weights.I waited for some feedback but none came .Thats no content? My second
set of pic showed no weights except the subwoofer. There were a wide variety of subjects,my
body ,girls ,boat, guns,my pupils funny letters, old system
Bozak Concert Grands ,a classic speaker from the 50s.
What have I omitted?I admit the resonators look weird
.I tried removing them but the sound suffered.I want someone to tell me where is the freak show.
My eyes can adapt to anything around me but when I experience the astounding sound that I hear from
the odd ball things a have done it is worth it.If iI take anything away I lose something.I am a compulsive  perfectionist in everything I do.If any of you tried any of
my tweaks you would have been rewarded.
I could care less whether I am popular with some of
you .Some of you are extremely mean and nasty ,and
I have given it back in spades .On the other hand I have
met some very nice sincere fellows who have contacted
me.One thing I dont do is bull----.I live audio 24 hours a day and my system improves every day.In my room adding weight works and I will take it as far as I can. What counts to me is my teaching and children. My
work is respected in every school Iteach.Children love me .I make them laugh and learn at the same time. Two
weeks ago I was called to work in the computer lab.The
Principal and others were so impressed ,they hired me
for 7 more days.Wed.and Thurs, I have a small class of emotionally disturbed children at another school, which
should be interesting. My classes are totally quiet and happy and responsive .This is unheard of for a substitute.
I plan on submitting some more pics ,some new ,some old .After that I will remove them .I have had I great deal
of fun dueling with some of you but its wearing thin, and
its obvious that you dont want to learn anything from me.Being a trained musician ,I have very little in common with most of you.So when you you look at my
pictures you had better be ready to explain what makes them a freak show!
none came.
