Wayner, really, your post was a bit baiting....zybar/George has spent a lot on his system, but doesn't exhibit much of an ego, or temper, about much. Your post, if pointed at him, was really miscued.

Rim,

I think I took too much distortion out of my analog setup, and it lost some magic because of it.

I set up my digital to have the perfect amount.

My guess is that's why you prefer vinyl and I prefer digital.

Now where do I add distortion

It started with the Turntable, then the arm, then the cart, then the rewiring of the tonearm, then an upgrade to the platter....at some point it got too revealing and less magical compared to my digital. At every step it sounded better, but somewhere along the way it lost the magic..or actually, as I upgraded my digital, it overtook it in emotion, convenience and lack of noise floor.

Actually, every change has an impact..it will either be more revealing, less revealing or neutral. Generally, the more revealing, the less distortion. At some point you cross a line and the "improvement" isn't worth it. Up until then it is.

It's tough for me to tell how revealing is too revealing until I get PAST that point...then I know. Then I have to go back.

It often takes time for me to tell when the line is crossed.

Anyway, Rim, it is clear I crossed the line and you did not.

I think in your mind you perceive yourself as God's gift to audio. How would a person with your ego ever admit that the thousands of dollars you spent on a system was a complete waste of money. Would you ever admit that someone who spent $4,000 on a system could actually have an impressive system? Many audiophiles have limited resources, but they do have great ideas about what sounds good and what components compliment each other. I think I have done very well as an audiophile over the last 40 years and I'm proud of it. I don't buy into notions about expensive interconnects, power cords or speaker wires. The dollars spent will not equal the increase in high fidelity.

None of it has been a waste to me..some of it was worth the education..

Every one has an opinion on this..I can certainly understand yours.

I have many systems in the house only the two best (and the one in my office) have upgraded speaker wires..most all have upgraded IC's, but only as hand me downs from trying various ones in my main rig.

Did you know Marbles was part of the founding of AudioCircle over 5 years ago? That he worked tirelessly for years attracting and retaining quality manufacturers to this site? That he policed the site at all hours of the day for scammers, spammers, and other malcontents and kept this site humming. He made nothing/nada/zero from it...and is now enjoying his time away (probably, quite a bit

Why are you crapping on him?....he's one of the very good guys here. He'll go over and above to help folks in need - and has. Really, you are again crapping on another misplaced target - again. He's chewed out a few folks over the years (he's got a temper - teehee), but never, never in 6 years have I witnessed him talking down to anyone. Seriously - never - he's quite a regular guy that way.

Please restrain yourself from these kind of outbursts in the future. Guys like zybar and Marbles don't need to rally AC membership for respect - they earned their share LONG ago here. Now, it's your turn - what are you gonna' do to earn our respect here at AC?
