Oakenfold's Tranceport is a relatively high-quality recording.

One real standout that I am aware of is the album Neon Golden by The Notwist.  Fantastic album and very high quality.  It's sort of an experimental glitch-pop album, heavily influenced by Jamaican "dub" and also small-group classical string arrangements, but with vocal.  Sometimes it devolves into entirely acoustic sounds, guitar and violin.  At other times it's almost full-on Drum & Bass.

This thing fits a lot of genres, it's even been called a rock album, in the new-ish hipster context.  It sort of has to be heard to be understood.  HIGHLY recommended.

Another one I love is Karsh Kale's Liberation.  Very, very cool worldbeat electronica album.  Some of the high frequency stuff on this album (rain sounds, etc) will send chills up the back of your neck.

Yep, i'm familiar with her (and the inverted relative to western society japanese names), as well --I prefer Ayumi. I think there's some sort of rivalry between the two in japan --see Ayumi's wikipedia article.

More dark ambient/electronica...

"Bass Communion is a project dedicated to Steven Wilson's recordings in an ambient and/or electronic vein, sometimes in collaboration with other artists. Most of the pieces are experiments in texture made from processing recordings of real instruments and field recordings."

Chicane- Behind the Sun (very good album)

One of the singles on that album is especially good:

Chicane- Saltwater feat Máire Brennan of Clannad (Thrillseekers Remix)

You may recall this song from a commercial for "Tourism Ireland".

... such a difficult task to find quality electronica (broadly speaking) with high production values; but i would recommend the following in the ambient/IDM vein:

  • Marconi Union : Distance
  • Helios : Eingya
  • Helios : Unomia
  • Bluetech : Sines & Singularities (lesser production values than the prior three, but a great album nonetheless)

cheers, bw

I Just got myself an album from 4-strings.

Great stuff! Very melodic and atmospheric!

Great thread. And coincidentally last night I was going to start a thread about music genre's other than jazz, classical and female vocals. over at Agon.

I will check in later with my suggestions on great recordings, but I see a few of my recordings already listed. of the three I really only listen to electronica.

I'll have to sit with a notebook for the next week.

until later, ed

good stuff imperial..

Many people don't know that there is good electronica(and lots of crappy electronica) just as in all genres. The best part is these tracks are usually produced totally in the digital domain with the help of a program such as Cubase or Reason.

4strings always puts out quality tunes

Try an oldie but a goodie:
solar stone-seven cities

anything by the thrillseekers their production quality is top notch
Armin van Buuren, Ferry Corsten, Aly and Fila, Above and Beyond...

Mizz :-)

I picked up a few CDs from this site, dedicated to electronica:

http://www.bne.co.il/onthemove/

Lots of Israeli techno here, superbly engineered and creatively interesting.  A couple of my favorites include:

Fatali - Faith
Infected Mushroom - Vicious Delicious

Also, I highly recommend Khmer, by Nils Petter Movaer..sort of acid jazz meets electronica/trance, available here:

I don't think anyone has mentioned Lemon Jelly.  Their 1st 2 albums are fantastic downtempo, sample driven techno.
The Thievery Corporation is always good.  Would recommend Sounds from the Thievery Hi-Fi (their 1st album) and Cosmic Game (most recent album).  Also, their DJ Kicks mix cd is always good.
Also, Nickodemus - Endangered Species and anything by the Fort Knox Five (funky techno).
Another that I've been enjoying the sound quality of recently is Into the Depths by Mark Rae, though this is more instrumental hip hop.
Finally, anything from the Earth or Cookin labels are all well done.

My contribution:

  • Crystal Method - Vegas: a defining classic of electronica. Tight sound.
  • Tosca - Dehli 9:  a newer classic.
  • Bonobo -  Dial M for Monkey: very chill melodies.
  • Skyway 7 - Passerby: Atmospheric synth based electronica.
  • Mouse on Mars - Radical connector: more analog synth stuff. eclectic, but fun.
  • Goldfrapp - Felt Mountain: 70's style movie soundtrack with electronica beats and female vocals, not your typical electronica.
  • Art of Noise -Ambient Collection and The Seduction of Claude Debussy- I might be pushing the electronica category, though I'd identify them as one of the grandfathers of electronic(a). Their music (started in the 80s)sounds great still today. A great listening experience.

Also I agree with previous suggestions: Chemical Brothers, Underworld, LCD Sound System. Especially Lemon Jelly (the 1st two discs) and Mum - Finally We Are No One, both for originality and sonics.  I'd choose Mum from all I mentioned if only given one choice.

A few listed above have samples from vinyl so snaps and pops are present. But that is part of this genre. Some may consider that un-audiophilian.
