Yes, Diana does need to do this to sell records. Her piano and singing have never been strong enough to sell the records without the sex appeal. I knew her in college, she was sexy then, but it was a tomboyish, unaware, teenager's sexiness. She never could really play great jazz, but her enthusiasm and her unassuming sexiness made the difference. Now she is leveraging her beauty and love of jazz to make a great career, and I am very happy for her. But she is not a jazz innovator, she is a jazz act.

I cant identify what is art here, the room? the soil? the smell of soil? the worms? the event in the museum? the artist? the artist fame?

If this soil work from 1977 is art where is it now??

This is precisely what makes a successful work of art. You're asking questions and thinking!

One of most overrated paintings are Guernica, completly ugly, few artists are free of painting a crap, not many have the talent of Rafael, Rubens or Caravaggio.

Emotional power are not a reliable standard for art, any visit to a morgue or penitentiary has lots of emotional power.
The only reliable standard for art is beauty, but I suspect you will no agree.

Germans bombed Guernica as that was the base for rebels fighting against Franco, Spain's dictator. At a time when speaking out could get you in jail and fighting could get you killed (Picasso was about 55 yo at the time.) The shock of this painting resonated throughout the world. It certainly did its job when there weren't cameras everywhere recording the horrors of war and the fascists.

Reliable standard? Who determines the standard? That goes back to a few people telling people how to think.

Well said. That sums up my feelings, too.
I used not to like her at the start of her career - putting her in the same category as Harry Connick Jr (pretentious and somewhat incompetent) - but I think her act has got better over the years, so by now I can find enjoyment in it.

If someone is publicly posing half clad in lingerie regardless of sex it seems to totally invite and be fair to comment on. Now as far as Lena Dunham nude - you'd have to pay me. Actually the constant exhibitionism of her obese tatooed body was one of the reasons I didn't make it past season one of her show. Brilliant on her part to get paid handsomely to write in, direct and have sex scenes  even if simulated with more attractive people. Don't have to attend the show though.

What if she just likes being sexy and showing off (especially at her age)?  Unnecessary, yes; distasteful, perhaps.  Surprised this thread is still going on.

Lena Dunham might not be the best example of that certain type of girl....

...BUT, you know you want to look at it.

I think the thread continues because it has become a discussion about what constitutes art.

Never going to resolve that one folks...

As for the actual album photos, I figure it is Elvis C brag posting!

"Beauty" is defined by how we respond to it emotionally.  And of course the morgue or prison aren't considered art.  That's not their primary purpose; they weren't built to elicit an emotional response, they were built to house the dead and separate criminals from society, respectively.

You're perfectly within your rights to only enjoy artwork that is beautiful.  Most people prefer it that way.  But to limit art to "beauty" is disingenuous at best.

Oh, and given the reactions it caused here, the DK cover certainly qualifies as art.

From my point of view the DK cover is low art at best. The black lingerie and the cat house type furnishings are cliche'. There's nothing original or unique that expresses the artist's vision. It's just a vehicle to attract attention and sell records. To call this art is a stretch. I prefer the room full of dirt. :P

I just went back to look at the cover in the original post.

On second look, I'd say it's pretty shabby.

My goodness, this thread, like Ms. Krall herself, certainly has some legs!
My hope is that she'll decide to do a Miles Davis tribute record so we can then start a new thread:
"Who hates Miles Davis being orchestrated by Dianna Krall!". I look forward to it with some enthusiasm.

There were ever only a small handful of Jazz innovators to begin with, and 95% of all Jazz out there is just recycling the same stuff IMOHO.  "Standards" seem to be keeping jazz alive.  I personally think DK is a very talented pianist that transcends the limitations of jazz and her best originals are very good pop.  As an interpreter I like her but her strength seems to be as a crossover artist.  "Purists" are and have always been snobs and there are far too few of them to sustain many careers.

I've heard Led Zep in elevators!  :green:

Which reminds me, I was in a chain supermarket in Flagstaff and they were playing classic rock music over the PA system as background music. I was listening to the Clash sing "Fxxx the Casbah, Fxxx the Casbah, Fxxx the Casbah....." thinking, I wonder if anybody is noticing this?

As you already say it, her voice seems not Jazz to me, too pop or Bossa Nova.
I prefer Jacintha.
