And a criminally slept on Classic is No ID's solo album.

He is best known as a producer. Common's early albums, then he taught Kanye the craft (check the Kanye shout outs to him in a song or so), and he did most of the production on the most recent Nas LP (best Nas in a while).

Yeah, I'll admit I have slept on No ID. I know he has produced some killer stuff that I listen to and love. His solo album likely came out during that time while I was out of the loop and only followed a few artists. I'll have to check it out.

Z-Trip and Radar session I know, but haven't checked out others.

I'm not as into the DJ albums as much as I used to be......likely because I don't really follow the hip hop groups they often teamed with, such as J5. They all kind of went hand in hand.

We seem to be on the same hip hop "path." We went to college around the same time frame. We've brought up almost all the same artists and albums. Here's a couple more : You've listened to Handsome Boy Modeling School, right? (Produced by Prince Paul and Automator). I can pull that first album out (So...How's Your Girl?) pretty much any time and enjoy it every time all the way through. Then there's Aceyalone's A Book of Human Language, which actually flew under my radar until about 2-3 years ago. REALLY great album and an underground classic.

Yes, I need to revisit Handsome Boy (love Prince Paul) and totally agree on Book of Human Language. Masterful.

Very similar paths indeed.

Wow! great stuff here gents. I have been following this thread and was a little surprised to not see Tribe Called Quest mentioned, especially Low End Theory and Midnight Marauders. Loved the shout out to Dj Premier but I really like Gang Starr as well. Has anyone here listened to Talib Kweli, Reflection Eternal? Very solid album. I will be picking up a few of the albums listed on this thread-thanks!

Yeah, hadn't gotten to the Tribe, De La Soul corner of hip-hop. Great stuff. Gangstar was solid too.

Actually, everything you're "surprised to not see" has been mentioned, including those specific Tribe albums. :thumb: See reply #32 by strider

Talib has been mentioned a couple of times I think, but no specific albums. Unfortunately I don't own any Talib albums, though I definitely like his music. I'll have to add Reflection Eternal to the list.

Listening to some casual Pandora and the song, Publicity, by GZA is playing. What an awesome song. GZA is easily one of the most underrated / under-appreciated MC's. I think his individual greatness gets a bit overshadowed by Wu-Tang's greatness.

Yeah, hadn't gotten to the Tribe, De La Soul corner of hip-hop.

They went by Indigenous Tongues, or something like that, when they played together, IIRC. Tribe, De La, Black Sheep, Busta, I think Latifah and Monie Love. May be some others I'm forgetting.

Edit: Looks like it was Native Tongues

I didn't know they were a collective. Very interesting info. Makes total sense to me now why they all have the same vibe.

You've gotta check out the movie Michael Rapaport (the actor from Higher Learning and True Romance) called Beats, Rhymes, & Life. It puts a lot of relationships into perspective, both inside and outside Tribe. It does make Phife out as a victim with the internal struggles in Tribe, but well done nonetheless.

Is this one of Atmospheres best?  Regardless, I think I'll buy a copy:

http://www.soundstagedirect.com/atmosphere-sevens-travels-180-gram-vinyl-records.shtml?cyEmail=Andrew.Manthey@gmail.com&utm_source=bronto&utm_medium=email&utm_term=Image+-+Atmosphere+-+Seven%27s+Travels&utm_content=Neil+Young%2CAtmosphere%2CMiles%2CSpector%2CVPI%2CRega%2CClearaudio+and+More&utm_campaign=12%2F6+mailer

Yes, Seven's Travels is one of Atmosphere's best. Definitely worth buying.
If you want a fairly complete chronological understanding of Atmosphere's music without buying ALL their albums, I'd get:

1. Lucy Ford
2. God Loves Ugly
3. Seven's Travels
4. You Can't Believe How Much Fun We're Having
5. To All My Friends

In my opinion, Atmosphere may be the most consistently good underground hip hop group I've come across. This is another big reason I like them so much. I have always been able to confidently buy an Atmosphere album and never be let down.

This thread was going strong for awhile. You can't tell me there are less than like 10 people on AC who like hip hop or at least liked it at one time.

You say one for the treble, two for the time.
C'mon y'all, let's rock this.......:thumb:

I have difficult time appreciating much of main stream Hip Hop. The bar is set quite low for "good lyrics." Repetitive beats. Sampling great artist by merely degrading the original beats, rather than transforming them to a new place. Desperate fantasies of consumerism. Bull%^t bragging. Etc.

But there is a lot of good Hip Hop if you look a bit off the beaten path. Check out Mos Def's Kalifornia if you want to see how something beautiful (by Mahavishnu Orchestra) is given a different twist. His collaboration with Talib Kweli on Black Star is almost equally amazing.

If you like jazz, you might want to check out the Digable Planets' Blowout Comb album.

peace

Yeah I know. You should read the thread.  :thumb: Pretty much nobody here likes any mainstream cRAP, myself included. It really gives the art a bad rep...........but, I guess there's a place for it (among many garbage products) as typical consumers will buy up whatever they're exposed to. It's all just a big stupid pissing contest.

Having base knowledge of the history and cultural impact of hip hop was paramount in my learning to appreciate the music as an art form.

See, that's cool. The only music I really struggle to appreciate is pop country......but, like mainstream rap, there's an audience for it.
