first off im not  a great writer
for 300$ i cant see any way anyone could be disapionted with this unit :o
as you already know its built like a tank, has the best display ever and reads very fast.the remote is solid .

how does it sound :?:
to me it is a sweet sounding unit, has nice depth and stage, instruments are well placed- bass is very strong and tight (was affraid about the lack bass after it was first hooked up)every bit as good as a ss cd player.
mids and vocals are   -boy they sound good to me- everything that ive played so far the vocals and guitar are sweet and easy to listen too.the top end was a little soft and rolled off for me  before i changed the stock tube for a nos amperex, now it is very nice(ac/dc -long way to the top- bagpipe used to breakup and sound funny with other players when cranked, not any more i can crank it).the nos tube also appears to have better speed and rythm. it never sounds digital just smooth, i can listen all day with no ear bleed or headache  plays cd, cdr but not cdrw.
the hdcd is a great addition-wish i had heard the format before-

i have nothing high dollar to compare it to-this is the most expensive player ive bought so far.

is it perfect, no-i just cant find any faults that annoy me or any thing that bothers me about it either-it doesnt take alot to impress me i guess, just a solid build and a nice  sound-the toshiba i discovered is still going strong at aa so my ear might not be too bad.

the unit does not have a warranty-you can buy one from the dealer(nysound)for 100$-i didnt :o  after looking inside i am not worried :thumb:

music-
doors(hdcd)-stones,sublime, stevie ray vaughn, dave mathews, dire straits(hdcd), blind mellon,ac/dc,tom petty, govt mule, big head tod,joe cocker, paul simon ,allman bros, sugar ray, peter frampton, guns and roses ,pink floyd to name a few.

equipment-
odyssey extreme monos  and selahaudio designed 3.5 way stand mount-
odyssey standard monos and a vmps large sub-
tempest pre-
sansui tuner-(tu-317, tu-888 or t-80)

Hey rosconey, what other players did you compare it to?  How does it sound compared to the Tosh?  Is your Tosh modded?

Where do you buy that CDP?  I've heard the name but never found out who imports them.

If you buy a CD player in this era of multiple formats, have you given up on DVD-A and SACD? Or do you have a separate player?

I'm in the same market... where I'm looking for a good CDP that does at least redbook cd's well.  I was pretty close to buying a BAT cd player but have decided to find something much cheaper until building an audio PC. (bypassing the BAT)

Why do I bother with looking for something that will work really only for redbook cd's?  I don't think all the new formats are going to make it.  Which one falls out as the winner?  Will it be 'DVD-A' or 'SACD' or what?  Someone in China probably got a great deal on the HDCD chip... a dying format from what I've read.... A lot of the Chinese players have HDCD....  I don't know or care which ends up reigning champ of digital formats.  I do know that I have my entire library in redbook CD's.... so, getting a good player that resolves those well is my primary concern.

Also, IF the higher resolution formats sound better then it's like buying an HDTV... you get a few channels that look great now but when will the rest of the stations fit your screen?

To people like me, who don't think the higher resolution sounds all that much better, time and media availibility is on our side.

I'm pretty zealous in my love for DVD-A (and SACD, to a lesser degree), but I don't mind in the slightest having separate players.  Hey, any excuse to have more gear! :P

Interesting, I wonder how it stacks up against some of the other somewhat low cost tubed players.

Rosconey,

Your review left off one very important quality, This is a really cool looking CD player.  Even people not into HiFi will like this player.
