Greatest guitar player ever, died today...
« on: 18 Sep 2012, 07:06 pm »
...in 1970 in London, James Marshall "Jimi" Hendrix died at the age of 27.  It is mind boggling that such a young guy who has been gone for over 40 years continues to influence so many musicians and is still regarded by so many as the greatest to ever live.  I'm not going to get caught up in a debate but Jimi will always be my favorite.

RIP

Damn!  That's the first time in a long time I've seen anyone use "whom" properly in a sentence structure!  Well done!   :thumb:

As dopey as it sounds today, I wore black for a week when he died (maybe a month?  for some reason those days are hazy;).  I was fanatical about Jimi.  Does my heart good to see that my love and appreciation for this musician hasn't diminished and proven itself totally justified.  So many of the 'other guys', and especially the 'psychedlic' stuff, has aged horribly.

Jimi was a true innovator but hardly the greatest guitar player ever.

Had he lived no one would have ever put him even in the top 10 guitar players.

Premature death is the fastest way to fame.

The greatest guitar player ever is a fruitless argument. There's a bunch of damned good ones, unemployed, that we've never even heard of.

Even Castles made of sand, fall into the sea, eventually.

Thanks, Jimi. RIP

If not the greatest Jimi was certainly one of the most influental guitarists of all time.
As to what he may have gone on to do there is no way of telling.

Edit:  you had an extra "to" in the well-done "whom" phrase!   :nono:

Sr. Mary Anita never DREAMED I'd turn out to be a decent writer/editor.  She was SURE I was gonna end up in hell by my 16th birthday.  Though I did come close.   :thumb:

While I admit I was not a real Hendrix fan, everything I heard was FM produced. My wife introduced me to the Blues cd and now it's one of my favorites.
Just picked up a used copy for a friend of mine and he can't believe it. I wish everyone could hear a true blues musician like Jimi before they all perish.

ps: He didn't die today, he died on this day

While not my favourite, Jimi was one of those bright comets that flash across our collective sky, and disappear
over the horizon--
I remember the day when.

Challenge: listen to the live Band of Gypsies CD and then name a better electric guitarist. I will admit John McLaughlin playing live with the Mahavishnu Orchestra circa '72-'73 was right up there, but Jimi was the best IMHO. From my hometown here in Seattle too, same high school
