James,
I'd like to thank you for pointing me to the Passports. It seems all my power problems are vanished, and when reentering the Lacie 500gb they come back again, in various ways and qualities (received the error message about an invalid Filesystem too)

In fact, I have the Passport in one of the front ports (because the cable is too short for the back ports, and it works like a charm, even with a Bryston Thumbdrive next to it. Previously the 500gb Lacie caused al sorts of distortion alongside front loaded ports, even when loaded in the back-ports.

I ordered 2 more of them, found a place where the sell rather cheap.
Again, Thanks!

Marius

Hi Marius,

Great news - I now have 3 of them as well in different colours so I do not get confused. :duh:

O how I wanted that too, but my CEO would not agree to that....Silver it has to be.
Calling them 1 2 and 3 now. On the other hand, going along fine with the Mac look. As we say in Holland: 'ieder nadeel hep zijn voordeel' (Johan Cruijff's most famous words meaning "every disadvantage has its advantage")

if that's what it takes, I oblige gladly.

HI James, Chris,

Maybe I cheered too soon, in firm believe (hope) the power HDD issues were gone, but when I reboot the BDP1 the front displays reads Updating for a second, then Unsupported_FS. I then have to push the right arrow button, and the BDP indicates it is updating again.

What could be the cause of that? I have 2 1tb wd Passports connected on the back usb ports now. 2 usb thumb drives in the front-ports. Both Passports formatted fat32. And playing fine as we speak... not unsupported after all apparently

In trying to eliminate issues on the 4 usb ports I realized it would be very helpful if the BDP1 would indicate which port/usb device is the troublemaker. Would it be possible to have Chris code that into the software. Sytem-commands accompanied with the drive in question? "usb1: Updating" "usb2: unsupported_Fs" etc etc.

Thanks,
Marius

Hi Marius

One of the drives must be formatted MAC HFS+.   The BDP will load it but the unsupported warning will come up while it is loading.  It is much better to format the drives Fat32 or NTSF.

Strange, I will check again. I specifically formatted them with the disk utility as MSDos (=fat32)

I'll be back...

OK I will check with Chris but it may also be a file it does not like.

Hi James,

Checked again: both my WD Passports 1Tb are MsDos (fat32) formatted. Both in Finder under Info, and the Diskutility.

Marius,
I had a similar issue.  See Chris' comment on this thread.

Hi Tony,
Thanks i remember that. Chris wrote: "Hi Tony,

I have a sneaky suspicion that you formated the drive on a mac.  When you format a drive using a GUID partition map it creates a small 200MB fat32 partition called EFI.  It is this partition on the drive that the BDP-1 is referring to when it says "Unsupported_FS".  The other partition with all your music on it should be visible to the BDP-1.

Cheers,
Chris"

That;s why I asked which option to choose when formatting in MsDos (fat32) earlier. On the Mac I have 3 options, including the GUID, don't remember the other 2 right now...

What did you do to get rid of the unsupported_fs?
Thanks,
Marius

Marius,
After I updated the BDP-1 software to S1.19 2011-10-01 the Unsupported_FS just flashes on the screen when the BDP is started up and then goes away.  I just ignore it.

not the case over here, Unsupported_FS only disappears after pressing the buttons on the BDP1.

I have to check the formatting again, to see whether one of the other options does not have this problem. Maybe Chris can look into that too?

these are the formatting-options on a MSDOS (fat32) partition:

Which option would be preferred for the HDD's attached to the BDP1? Or put differently: which option does not lead to the Unsupported_FS error?

Thanks,
Marius

PC strange thing is that with my previous LAcie drive this error did not appear. Same formatting procedure though

I haven't hit that error and I select the MBR.     GUID I would expect to work for all unix and Linux based OSes today.   The middle option is Apple's old old old file system table.

BDP-1 networking question: I originally installed my BDP-1 with a separate router for a closed network with my iPad2 - worked fine of course. I want to be able to utilize the installed preset online radio stations and need internet access for the BDP-1 . So I have now run a 50 ft. CAT5 network cable from my office and main router to the BDP-1 (connected directly into the BDP-1, no longer using the second router). My question is this: is there any benefit to running a separate/dedicated router with the BDP-1 vs. connecting via a long CAT5 cable and sharing the connection with the main router? I am interested in doing whatever will give the utmost sound quality. Do I need to worry about degradation with a long (50 ft) CAT5 networking cable? (I understand no issue with regular iPad/BDP-1 usage, but wondering about when streaming radio stations, etc.) I assume the main router isn't continuously sending data/info into the player unless called for by the BDP-1 or my iPad2 correct? I want to be certain before I cut up my finger tips trying to press fit and burry 50 ft. of cable under the wood trim in my house... This may be a stupid question, but I really appreciate any assistance with this. I am not well versed in this stuff. If it is detrimental to sound quality or adding noise problems, etc. I will just forgo the radio streaming portion and go back to dedicated router.

One more quick question: what is the resolution quality in general for the preset radio stations?
(I assume it varies a bit with each station - but asking overall in general).

I can't see it making a difference, as, except for internet radio and that's not the BDP-1's main function in life, no actual music goes over Ethernet, just control stuff basically.

Besides, as mentioned earlier elsewhere, why don't you just use Ethernet over power lines?
No long trailing Ethernet cables.
Simples.

I have heard differing opinions on it muddying the electrical signal.
I have UPC 200 power filter from PS Audio, but it is not a power regenerator. Would rather stay away from anything I am not certain about as far as things adding or causing noise on my power lines. I have no reason to believe it will damage my power quality, but just working on a basic assumption that if it works over the power lines, it must be doing something. Not arguing one way or the other, but that was my basic feeling when researching them in Best Buy earlier today...

BDP-1: Leave on or turn off after use?
I have been turning it off after each listening session.
Any reason I should not be doing this and just leaving it on 24/7?

Hi

It draws very little power so I tend to leave mine on unless I am away for a few days.
