Internet Radio on BDP-1?
« on: 7 Mar 2011, 09:22 pm »
Hi Folks,

We are considering adding a few internet radio stations to the software in the BDP-1 Digital Player in the next release.

We are looking for 5 quality recommendations available through:

Thanks Phil

Yes I thought it would be nice to offer maybe 5 or 6 preloaded stations of the best quality with different content mix.

Anyway to get it to play Pandora so that the user could choose his/her preferences?

Why don't you do a internet radio/HD combo unit? You are looking to mate an HDD with the bdp aren't you? Put a dedicated internet radio tuner on it.

I guess that is the idea of the new Marantz piece, DAC, Internet Radio, streaming.  I'm not sure it is Bryston's niche.  I picked up the Squeezebox Touch at a 40% off deal and have an upgraded power supply for it and I can tell you it sounds really good on internet radio going through the BDA-1

Internet radio would be good for me on the BDP-1, an excellent value add.

Cheers

Hi Folks

I have about 10 Internet radio stations loaded on a beta software on my BDP and so far so good.

The list of available stations shows up as the call letters under the heading RADIO 1 under Playlists in Bryston MINI or MAX or MPOD or MPAD etc. When you click on a station the song and artist will show up and you can scroll through the stations listed exactly like you would with a song playlist.

You can also create you own list of stations say Radio Favorites with just the stations you want to listen to on a regular bases. Because you can only use the list included in the internal software how many stations do you think we should include?  I was thinking maybe 10 of the top recommended stations?

James

PS - the Bryston BDA-1 DAC decodes the Internet radio stations at 44.1 which you can upsample to 176/24 if you want.

Hi James,

Could you just clarify for me these lines "You can also create you own list of stations say Radio Favorites with just the stations you want to listen to on a regular bases. Because you can only use the list included in the internal software how many stations do you think we should include?"

I am not sure if you meant you will only ever be able to listen to the pre-fixed radio services but could just do a favourites list from them, or you have say 10 slots available and you can then browse for whichever station you like under that?

For example in the UK BBC - talk sport is one I use but would not be of much interest to most of the rest of the world, would I be able to make that one of my 'stations'?

On this note, are there geographic restrictions on some stations, you may want to be sure that any you pick if they are fixed are playable in every county you sell to?

Regards

Hi Alpha,

Yes the 10 stations are set in software so you have to pick from that 10.... say 3 you generally listen too and you can put them in a separate list if you wish.  Had not considered the geographical issue - interesting.

Hi Joey,

No sorry - the radio stations links are part of the new software - so the 10 or 12 we give you can be put into say you're favorite 5 stations as a Playlist but the original stations are set.  Now we can change them going forward over time with new software so what I am hoping is we can have a consensus on which 10 stations people like best and we will offer them as a standard download?

The Internet Radio stations show up as a Playlist (Radio 1) on your interface.

Thanks James, it's a great added feature to the BDP-1, am I correct though that perhaps it's not replacing an internet radio tuner, for someone that wants to surf the 1000's of internet radio stations?

Correct for those wanting to surf the Radio Internet the BDP is not the right choice.

I don't mean this the wrong way James, but why limit it to what Bryston has chosen?  If you ask 100 people what their top ten are, you'll get 1000 answers.  While frustrating for you guys, it's even more frustrating for the buyer.  Wouldahoy buy a Magnum Dynalab tuner that only gets 10 stations that the manufacturer thinks you should listen to?  A car stereo with the same issue?  I say go all out Internet tuner or not at all.

I know the BDP-1's primary function isn't Internet radio.  That feature is more of a convenience than anything else.  But if you're contemplating adding it, do it right IMO.  Not to mention, what'll the hifi rags say about that in a review?  I'd imagine they'd say how hard would it have been to add full Internet radio. I think everyone but the most die hard Brystonites would have a problem with it too.
