I have read that there are counterfeit VR-1, VR-2, VR-4 JR, LCR-1, TS-150, and VR-S/1 subwoofers so I would be leery of anyone selling new old stock VR-x speakers. This is probably one of the few occasions where buying used would be safer than new as long as the seller acquired the speakers from a reputable source.

wow! it's hard to believe, doesn't just apply to rolex anymore

the ones i'm talking about are at a authorized von dealer, so hopefully safe

wonder what the first indicator is that they are not the real deal?

Some companies have kits, or "flat packs", where all the measurements, cutting and sawdust was done for you. All that's left can be done with a screwdriver, some glue and some clamps.
Ever put one of those chipboard entertainment centers together? Yea, it's like that, but much better.

Plus, there's much more pride in something you've built yourself. Not only that, but speakers you built will generally sound better than speakers you bought off the shelf.

Just an idea.

Better yet, find someone who has built a set of cabinets and has them for sale cheap.
jparkur has these up for sale over on the GR-Research circle: "N3s black 1 inch MDF cabinets c stock 180 dollars, No Rez, Shipped"

Already built, painted, and lined with No Rez. Add the GR-Research N3 kit for $389 and you've got yourself a pretty good speaker for under $600

No Rez is a cabinet lining that reduces cabinet resonance. I've used several materials over the years and it's the best that I've run across, but it's not exactly cheap. To have the cabinets already lined with it is probably a $40-50 bonus. I've used it in a couple of projects with noticeably good results. Parts Express even has pre-finished cabinets. Just cut out for the drivers/binding posts, wire the crossover/drivers and you're done. They even sell replacement front baffles just in case you mess one up. (If you're like me, just order an extra one to reduce the pressure to measure/cut perfectly the first time.
