The only issue there is that the 5744 does not natively support Blue LED drive

What makes you say that?
So long as you fit a zener with a p-n junction it will experience a rapid avalanche breakdown and conduct current in the reverse direction.
This will be good for all colours of LED or am I missing your point?
Unless you are alluding to the issue with Cherenkov radiation?

I was just laughing to myself that if you look at the penultimate line of the family sheet you will see it says:

Blue LED drive  =  No

And everyone takes the micky out of me and wanting blue LEDs on everything.

Would we be better off with something built around this, with 4 SATA compatability?

Yes, but probably very negotiable these days. Also there is no real development time/costs, use an enclosure you already have and a power supply and you are good to go. New product and happy customers

Does look like a decent module though and $199 is the one-off price after all.
Create a rectangular cutout on the case rear panel and you can bolt the unit straight onto it.
Cuts out a load of extra cables.
Same with the front panel controls too, bolt their LCD module onto the case front panel.

Status LEDs:
 RAID Status LED (Green): RAID
 Power LED (Red): POWER
 Unauthenticated Status LED (Red): UNAUTHEN
 Authenticated Status LED (Green): AUTHEN

Have looked at it and the problem is the cost involved to provide a quality chassis and power supply - not sure it would fly.

That is really very very bad news. I am surprised it is that difficult and expensive to be honest, and it would have been a real bonus to BDP owners.
