The SAE has a very healthy 2.5mV output, so I'm curious as to why you need a step-up?

I use a typical MM phono section (40db) with a 15db line section.  Plenty of gain.

Not if it gives you too much gain such that you can't get the volume pot off the bottom of its range, and into territory where it sounds its best (typically between 10 and 2 o'clock).

With 2.5mV out + step-up, most phono stages will clip.
Ortofon T 10, a tranny?

Maybe the phono isn't clipping and the extra dynamics are needed. I think that's possible with the right phono stage and a marginal gain situation.

I thought that would overload and clip too. I'm not going to try it on the Jasmine with 70db gain on the MC side.

Although at one time I was running a Dyna 10X5 into the MC section of the EE Mini Max phono because it sounded better.

I have actually lowered my phonostage gain a bit with the 1000LT.

That brings up another point. Using a tranny would change the load, wouldn't it?

Yup, it would.
On a step-up trannie it would not be that adjustable. Maybe 2 settings?

I hesitated purchasing the SAE 1000 due to it long storage. I have had good and
bad experiences with cartridges bought in the 80s. The good was the Van Den Hul lll (Goldring with VDH stylus). It been my favorite because it is so neutral.
The bad was a Genisis 1000 which developed harshness over time. Complex
passage were very distorted. Increasing the tracking force reduced the distortion somewhat but it still was unacceptable. I felt the SAE may be risky but the AC posts have been reassuring and I will try it.

Don't think you have to hesitate.

I am the first here to buy one (an elliptical version) then I bought an LT version. Both are sounding great after quite a few hours on each.

The elliptical is a tiny bit more musical. The LT is a little bit more detailed and tracks better.

I communicated several times with the seller before I bought one. He was quite assuring that they had no degradation. He claimed they were found in the drawer of a file cabinet in a cool warehouse, so the exposure to the elements were minimal.  And my experience bore that out.

This guy on Ebay has them for $325.

Over a $100 more. Still worth it, but a little hard to swallow.

Guys, pretty sure i'm sold on buying one of these but can only afford the elliptical version for now.  Is that a bad choice, or is the comparison a few posts up accurate?

In the past i've had a Grado Gold and AT440mla.  Even though the AT tracked better & was more detailed, i liked the big bold musicality of a longhorn'd Gold.

William Thakker is in Germany.  Vortrex, does it have to be a US seller?

I saw those, but I think for $335 it's maybe not worth the effort for me.  I have a nice cart now (zephyr), but at $216.50 shipped it was hard to pass up.  I see the alfred guy has the E's on ebay now, maybe I'll pick one of those up.

I'm sure the E is still a very fine sounding cartridge.

Just get the E....you will need to spend at least 800.00 to touch it.

I bought an E today from Alfred off eBay.  I paid extra for the shipping to get the original box with it, like the ad said.  after shipping the item the seller emailed me to say he has no more original boxes and instead he was included mounting screws.  kind of lame, since I don't need screws and I paid the extra for shipping the big original box.

I think you will be fine with the E. I know that Joe K. of GAS has both and thinks they are quite similar. I love the way mine sounds. Not bad for for what it cost. I think it's better than my Shure M97x with the SAS stylus for less money. Which says a lot since the M97x/SAS is very good. It reminds me of a cross between the Stanton 681eee and the Shure type V.
