I actually just had a conversation with him the other day. SME keeps ALL of their tooling and will make him small batches of replacement parts for the older SME arms. So his SME parts are more like NNS rather than NOS.

You all got me interested in the SAE 1000. And I think I am going to buy the LT version to start with.

Has anyone tried it on a Mitchell Gyro by any chance?

I have a Rogue Magnum Corus amp and will be using a Ortofon T10 step up with it.

Will come back and let you guys know how it all went

The SAE is high output, no step-up needed, MM phono section is only requirement.

I been running my LT at 47k, then I loaded it at 1000 ohms; and I have to say that at 1000 ohms it sounded closed in. I went back to 47k and it was like a blanket was lifted from the speakers. So yea, I run mine at 47k with great results!

Which naturally brings up the question of why you tried 1K in the first place. Maybe it was just to hear what happens - curiosity, or maybe you thought it might improve. Loading down a HOMC is a little different than loading down most other HO carts. Frequency response changes usually aren't as straightforward. Dynamics vs focus or control is more like it. If one area of frequency response is more pronounced, which could be either bass or treble, perhaps loading will help. Sometimes reigning in excessive dynamics can work on the offending frequency range. It's not unusual for manufacturers to specify a load like > 1K. This is system dependant but carts like the DL-160, some HO Dynevectors can be heard on Davey W web site, loaded down. If there was a problem or you're just curious, you might try 10K or even higher. I'm not saying there's a problem, just discussing loading a HOMC.

Am suspecting that these are the options on Plastico's phono stage.
A mate of mine has a Trichord Dino that offers 47k, 1k and 100 ohms.
I've helped him parallel down from the 47k value - possibly something Plastico could consider?

I've had my eye on them for quite sometime. I've been dealing with the seller (Alfred Kayser) for quite sometime as I'm a ravenous SME tweaker. An excellent guy to deal with and whose other products are top notch (no affiliation with him though) . I've also become addicted to LC stylus varieties.

Right now I have the Ortofon X5-MC and I love it, had a nice Sonos Blue Gold for a while before a channel went on it, very critical cartridge. I still love the Grados but damn those LC styli, they're addictive. And I seem to remember Coral making some very nice-sounding carts, so...

For those of you that have them, what was the break-in time for you?

Hi Neo. I replaced my Dyna 10x5 with the SAE1000lt, and I ran that cart at 1000 ohms. Before my Dyna I had a Denon DL 160, and I ran that at 1000 ohms. Both of these HOMC carts sounded their best loaded this way, so I wondered if my HO SAE1000 would sound just as good loaded at this value. My phono pre is a Grant Fidelity 307 tube. It has only mm inputs, with no loading adjustments.I solder different resister values on phono plugs and use dual phono plugs at the phono pre.
Now to your question Delta Wave, I have found that 50 - 60 hrs on the SAE 10000e and the lt, is when these carts started to really sing! My Rega P3 is hot-rodded to the nines, and I have a Bryston 4B ST pushing it out,so I think I have a pretty good handle on what is going on with these carts.

I have the E version and I gotta say it is really superb. I have several other carts and it hangs with all of them, and possibly beats them -- Dyna 20X-H, Clearaudio Virtuoso Wood, Clearaudio Maestro.

Not just me that feels this way. Several audio buds have heard it in my rig and expressed same sentiments.

For 200 bux no reason to hesitate, it's a no brainer! What's worse case? If it doesn't work for ya, I think there's enough buzz out there that it will sell as very lightly used for 150 or so. Down 50, big deal. Big upside, small risk.

Oh, and I load it at 47k. Sounds so friggin' good there I have no desire to try other settings.

Hey sunnydaze. I cannot believe this cart hangs and possibly beats these upper class carts! I was thinking of getting a Dyna 20X2-H to replace my Dyna 10x5, then I discovered this SAE cart, BOY am I glad I did !!!

It seems that specs are the same for both. They share a common spec sheet with the only difference being the tip. I think cu is around 17 to 19. Somewhere back in the thread, recommended arm mass is up to 11g ? You probably be fine with most med mass arms though, maybe the heavyweights would be too much. I had a similar Adcom back in the day and med mass was OK.

I can't believe the list of carts this has replaced or bettered. Good Golly!!
Well, if you think about it this would probably be around $1K today, new, or close to 1K. You've got a boron cantilever, flat response and eff tip mass of .3mg. Not bad for a HOMC. Just think, it will probably cost more to get re-tipped than buying it NOS.

Right out of the box this cartridge is every bit as good as my Ortofon X5-MC, which I like very much; as it worked extremely well with my setup. I can only imagine how well it's going to sound when it's actually broken in.

Hi guys,

Just started listening to my 1000e on my michell gyro with a ortofon 10 setup...and i have to say it sounds grat already. Cant wait for it to be broken in...wonder how it will sound in 100-200 hrs from now.

The ortofon T10 step up is amazing too by the way....the sound is fine without it but with it its another story alltogether...

Will let u guys know more in 100 hrs or so.
