I became introduced to a wonderful assortment of female vocalists in a similar thread, so why not
one for guitarists?

List your top ten favorite guitarists.  Not in any order. If you want to leave a link for a sample/taste.....cool.

Mine are from my era, but I know there are great players from every age.

Interesting.  When I read the topic, my mind went a totally different direction, as I just don't listen to rock much anymore.

1. Andres Segovia
2. Angel Romero
3. Paco de Lucia

Glad I'm not the only one.  Oh yeah, Charlie Byrd!  Especially on a couple of things I have of his.

These would be my boys :

Jimi Hendrix ( Because as John Lennon said to Elvis, " Before you there was nothing..." )

Albert King ( He of the toe-curling monster bends - no Albert, no Stevie Ray...an avalanche of Blues Power that crushes all before it...)

Ritchie Blackmore ( Distinct sound and excellence of execution...the original wang-bar
king so eat it raw, Eddie! )

Billy Gibbons ( The Reverend Billy G. brings righteous peso-picked grit and funky blue soul to the proceedings ...)

Tony Iommi ( Influential ? Puleeeze...the man launched an entire genre of music ...)

Carlos Santana ( Passion, soul and fire. Unmistakable. )

David Gilmour ( Such amazing expression. Always elegant, always eloquent...)

Jack White ( Because there is more to this than virtuosity. Jack White plays with his ass hanging over the ragged edge and that's rock n' roll,baby...)

Nels Cline ( His flights of furious fretboard frenzy keep Wilco from sliding irreversibly into dad-rock. Plus anybody who can put together a instrumental outfit and call it The Nels Cline Singers is OK by me...)
and finally...

Prince. Yes, Prince ( Beyond all the weird, Prince is one hell of guitarist. He is the kind of rhythm guitarist that drives the rest of the band but still provides a solid, funky foundation. And he effortlessly tears off jawdropping solos that smoke and sizzle and sear. And he does all this while putting on an incredible all-singing, all-dancing total entertainment experience in the great " Showtime!" tradition of classic American R 'n' B. I think the fact that he makes it all look so easy allows people to take it for granted.

And I could go on but that's ten.

D.D.

Wow am I going to show my age. So glad for all the great selections so far. Also this is how it should be... not who is best but who do we enjoy! I agree with so many choices but I will try to add mine and some of these just have not been mentioned yet but all yours are great! Just don't want anyone left out!

Michael Schenker- UFO. Beautiful melodies, beautiful phrasing and great vibrato!

Ty Tabor-King's X. Just love him. The best tone there is and it's solid state by the way. Really helped to put "dropped D" on the map. Um did I happen to mention that his' tone is the best there is?

Michael Gurley-DADA If you like tongue in cheek humor, great riffs, and awesome harmonies then I think it wouldn't be a waste of time to check out DADA. I really can't understand why they didn't "make it". Gurley is a very tasteful guitarist always seeming to be able to find the right note and put it in the right place.

Dave Menneketti- Yesterday and Today, Y&T. The heart of a blues player trapped in a rock god. Truth revealed through a fretboard.

Alex Lifeson-Rush. Do I really need to say anything?

Pierre Bensusan. Very interesting fingerstyle guitarist in the same genre as Michael Hedges who I love very much.

Elliot Fisk. I know many people hate him but I have a couple of recordings that I just love his playing on and well, they really are some of my favorites.

Ian Anderson-solo and Jethro Tull. Well duh! He really is an incredible guitarist though and I have always loved his playing. Thanks Phishphan. Also love Phil Keaggy!

Robin Trower because he gave me a way to listen to Jimmy Dewar's beautiful voice and "daydream" and "bluebird" are two of my favorite songs of all time!

Jeff Beck. He has always been willing to take a guitar to places it shouldn't go but still found a way to make it sound like music.

Eric Johnson. Well he is really really good :)

Stevie Ray Vaughn is definitely at or near the top of my list.

Yesterday was an epic music day at my place.  I returned from a tough backpacking trip and dedicated the day to being lazy.  I went upstairs just after noon and jammed for hours to a variety of vinyl and cd, before settling into some excellent guitar music to warm up for the Buddy Guy / BB King live performance that I was going to see later in the evening.  I've seen Guy and King before and though they are both getting old, they still put on a great show (especially Guy, he's pretty raunchy in concert).  But listening to SRV on vinyl and SACD (Couldn't Stand the Weather and Texas Flood, respectively), I was nearly brought to tears at the thought that this incredible talent was lost forever to the music world in such a meaningless accident.  Feeling the intensity and his  effortless control and mastery of the strings, I was reminded of the comments of his wife who said she was regularly awakened in the middle of the night by Stevie playing his guitar while dreaming, his picking and fret hands working furiously as if he was actually holding the instrument.

Listening to the older legends playing later in the day, I couldn't help but draw comparisons.  As great as they are and were, I'm convinced that SRV would have evolved into one of the greatest guitarists that ever lived.  I think I'll spin some more SRV today in honor of a great musician who left us far too early.
