What, no love for Tom Morello? I think the guy is one of the new pioneers of what can be done w/ the guitar. It may not pass for old school vituoso playing, but he innovated in sounds. One of the vanguard of the 21st century IMO.

There are many other great guitar players....and I listen to many...and I dont think I am 'stuck' anywhere....there may be more technical guitarists than Satriania, Vai or Rittenour...having seen Joe S play live up close and personal...this guy is an ANIMAL on this instrument..hardly stuck..

I also should have mentioned Chet Atkins and Tommy Emmanual...had the pleasure of seeing both in small  venues...again freaking awesome...

All the best

Nothing personal meant by that, Alex.  It's just that when I see Satch and Vai, Via and Satch over and over here and on other boards I find it a bit stale, personally speaking.  I take nothing away from the abilities of either.  It's the notion that these are somehow the gold standard bearers that wears thin.  There was a time, again speaking personally, where they bore the gold standard for me as well, but somehow after a certain period fatigue set in and I realized that half of their prominence was due to accessibility, which ultimately meant record company marketing.  Although with marketing prominence removed both began to strike me as pedestrian retreads of themselves and ultimately provided less and less enjoyment.

It seems every other (rock) guitarist of note has to be viewed through the Satch and Vai lense, as if some measure of credibility would be lacking without it.  This is a notion I find wholly false and even a bit offensive.  Nevertheless both Satch and Vai ultimately served only as a stepping stone toward uncovering what I truly wanted to hear, and these were qualities neither seemed to deliver.  We don't all take the same paths of discovery to be sure, but today I much prefer Mattias IA Eklundh and Christophe Godin holding my lense.  Somehow my musical journey is less nearsighted because of them.

Thanks for sharing that clip!

JD is a cool young guy who is a true student of the guitar.  He can play any style (including Jazz, Zepplin, etc.) and play it extremely well.  The clip is good but I kind've feel bad for guys like JD (and other "virtuoso" type players) because they are expected to "rip" and play something very difficult on the guitar, because that's what is expected of them.  Same is true of Roy Buchannon (not trying to compare the two because Roy was one of a kind).  In the Roy B., clips I see, it seems he is playing his "tricks" because that's what the croud paid their money to see.  He had an amazing sense of melody and could have played something subtle but the people paid to see flashy and that's what they got.

If you like country guitar (I like ALL guitar, as long as it's good), you might want to check out Albert Lee.  That dude is in another league with most of the blue grass and country players I've heard.  He is no spring chicken and can still tear it up, and make it look like he's not even trying.  It is extremely technical but never seems forced (IMO).  Here is a clip with him playing with Danny Gatton (awesome of course) and Vince Gill, a guy who gets no love around here but is a highly underrated player.  I've seen Vince play live and he is really something.  How an older Englishman can be the best bluegrass and chicken-pickin player I've ever heard is beyond me.  The fact that most people have probably never heard of him is a crime! :thumb:

Speaking of Ralph Towner, his best album out of the five or six I've heard is Batik (ECM).  To me, of course.  Part of the reason is the rest of his trio for this date, Eddie Gomez (bass) and Jack DeJohnette (drums).  The opening composition, Batik, is pure killer.  The moody title track is 16 minutes long.  During this period to include Gomez stint with Chick Corea, his playing was notably unique and impassioned.  He drives the hell of of the band.  DeJohnette is just his wing man.  On Corea's Three Quartets (re-released on some label or another), he drives the hell out of that band, too.  Corea's best group, IMO, with Michael Brecker and Steve Gadd.  Gomez has all this drive and somehow his instrument has a 'singing' quality to it.  There is nothing like it that I've heard.  Check out the tribute tracks to Coltrane and Ellington.  I just love that album, too.

Another add I would make is Julian Bream. With the current state of classical guitar focusing more on technical expertise, His musicaltiy is awesome

I made a boo-boo and if I hadn't listened to this just today, I would have let it slide.  But I did.  It's not the title track that has me so excited, no, it's the opening track of side two, Waterwheel.  It's a monster, take to heaven kind of something.  This is the Gomez I was talkin about.  On this and the Chick Corea CD, he is in a league with Richard Davis and Cecil McBee.  He drives the living crap out of this tune.  Well, his bass is an acoustic instrument, too.  And Towner is one of this most prolific and original acoustic guitar players ever to touch a string.  Enjoy

Okay, I don't want to change my list but I'd like to say my number one choice was number one by a long stretch.  The more I listen to Hendrix, the more I appreciate and marvel at his genius.  IMO, there is only one guitarist who wears the crown...

Music flows from his guitar like it has a mind of its own.  His playing is effortless, like breathing air, and beyond cool.

I can't really name a top ten...so many greats have already been mentioned.

David Russell. Definitely belongs on a Top Ten list somewhere, or perhaps even a Top Five. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vCtT9WIBySU

Kazuhito Yamashita Some elitists might break out in hives when they hear Yamashita play, but like it or not, he has taken modern classical guitar technique, dragged it to the edge of the cliff, and leaped over. He is fiercely and fearlessly expressive on his instrument, and we should all be this passionate in our work.

Julian Bream has already been mentioned for obvious reasons, but just to illustrate the point: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=spUT-2tU2Yk

Howard Roberts. One of my favorite jazz virtuosos.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h76NVQjwRR0

Ted Greene. Some of you guitarists may remember his book Chord Chemistry. Ted was very dedicated to guitar education, but only recorded one album, sadly. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BEh4RDSBjpg&feature=related

There are so many greats in rock who have already been listed, but I have to give Gilmour yet another mention because...I'm a fanboy of the guy :green:. I picked up the guitar because of him.

Who else sounds like this?
