That's an original Russian tube with top.
These tubes sounded pretty good, this amp sound so smooth and powerful compared to the original ST70 (I have 2, one with EL34, the other is modified for KT66). The driving circuit is totally different from original Dynaco. Mine use 2 5693 per channel.

Western Electric 212E & 845

Hey!

Man! The 212E makes 845 look tiny like EL34  How many watts can you get out of the 212E?

Take care,
Buddy :thumb:

I get 30W max out of the 212 E in this amp, running at 1100V, 90ma for long life on the tube.
You can get may be 50W but then you will need to run them harder, shorter tube life.

While it's awfully cool looking, horizontal power tubes is a really bad idea.  I'm surprised designers are still doing it.

Eric - You should hear how it effortlessly sounds.  Just don't get near the amp unless it's winter and your heater is not working.   :D

Is it? Seems like it would be more efficient at releasing heat since heat rises and you now have more surface area of the tube facing up. Like a vertical firelog vs one on its side.

The glass surface is the same no matter the orientation.  The horizontal tube mounting adds strain on the tube sockets as well as the heat dissipating on the side of the tube envelope/bottle and hot at the top as designed.  However, this is really a non-sequitur as many amps have employed a horizontal tube placement without any ill effects.

True Jim, but my issue is this; should the amp experience a failure of a single component in the bias circuit (we know this often happens) the tube can then run away and heat up the plates/grids/supports.  The innards of the tube can get hot enough to sag which can create a short that takes out your transformer.  The same can happen with a vertical tube but it must get much much hotter for the short to occur, giving you much more time to see the problem and turn the amp off.  I can only imagine what the power tranny in that Wavestream must cost!

Coincidentally, I ran across a YouTube video of the listening room of none other than George Cardas.
Guess what amp he's using? Yes, the Wavestream.
