My custom Larger... dun dun dun

When Brian announced he was using the new TC Sound woofers - my interest was a little more than peaked.

Unfortunately I just cant afford to buy one from a manufacture.

I am however handy with power tools and wood so I figured I would give it a shot myself.

I owned a Larger and took all the dimensions of it.

This is not done yet - I am going to do one more layer of plywood and a layer of solid wood and the drivers will be flushed.

I wanted to hear/feel the results before I invested in the plywood and solid wood...

So far the difference is night and day - we measured solid in room down to 15hz with the sub hardly breaking a sweat. Utilized a Crown XLS2500 (800 per woofer) and the amp was clipping while the amp laughed.

The final design will have an aluminum plate with insulated binding post and dual XLS1500 amps bridged (1555 watts at 4 ohms) driving it.

Tonight was impressive and my house needs to be reinforced...

Thanks man!

I cant wait till it is finished - we are guessing it is going to weight around 350 pounds, give or take...

The base will be 6" thick with the enclosure wall and base combined - so it shouldnt go anywhere and I have 8 thick rubber feet to bolt to it...

Will be exciting!

This is very cool!! It kinda makes my TC Sounds DIY 15" subwoofer look like a little toy.

Hello Vr3,
Great looking project. The 18" must have been a very tight fit. How & at what freq are you crossing this monster into your system? It would be great if you could post your measurements for the box!
Excellent idea on the DIY project, know you can't wait til it's finished

Here's my DIY TC Sounds 15" sub -- the woofer is downward firing. The pic shows the front firing passive radiator. The plate amp is the Parts Express thousand watter. Note the massive power cord. :o The woofer is tucked directly behind the seating position.

Very cool!

You said it was not an improvement over your old sub?

What type of connection are you using from your player?

No, it's a definite improvement!! Just gotta weigh the costs, though, to determine if it's worth the price.

In fact, the sub is almost too powerful. I probably need to move it out of the corner because it's localizable.

When I use to have my sub right next to the couch it was always way to loud and just annoying. It was to close for the wave lengths to come together - when I moved it roughly 17 ft away it really brought it to life.

Trey...what kind of fill did you use inside of the cabinet? Poly, insulation or something different?

The reason I ask is that the VMPS 215 sub I just purchased is full of yellow "insulation" type material that I personally do not like.

I have not gotten that far --

But in my test runs I did not use any fill because I am not done building it yet. I did not seem to miss anything (HT wise) with no fill. Not sure how music would sound...

Long term - I plan to add No-Rez on most of the inner panels and see if I feel the need to go from there.

FWIW - I frequent Club Polk far more than here... just for future reference...

Thanks man!
