Being a trumpet player we usually enjoy performers for different reasons. For me I will always be a Maynard guy, even though the old school jazz guys don't like him. Im so happy i got to listen to him at one of his last concerts even though at that point he wasn't the same player he was 20 years before. Second would be either Herb Alpert or Bill Chase

Fav recording probably Admiral's horn or Manteca

You know how you go through life oblivious to some 'item' until someone points it out, then you can't not notice it?

Another thread was extolling Oliver Nelson "The Blues and the Abstract Truth", so I ordered it. It arrived today, just threw it on, what do you think the first song is? That's right, 'Stolen Moments' with Freddie Hubbard on trumpet.

Not to shabby.

Ted Curson is another trumpet player that can cut it. I just listened to an old Mingus album the other night. Candid records, rec 1960 - just called Mingus. Curson sounds good on there. It's a funny album. Mingus tells the audience not to make noise - no tinkling glasses or cash register. They do Fables of Faubus and he calls out to Danny Richmond, Who's Ridiculous? Danny goes, Eisenhower, Nixon, etc etc. A couple of times he (Mingus) mentions the Klu Klux Clan and makes spooky ghost noises.

When I was in high school I played trumpet in the dance band, a traditional big band. Maynard was my idol. I saw him live 3 or 4 times in the mid '60s. He could not only navigate in the stratosphere, he actually had tone up there. Most guys would just screech. He always had a great band. It was always fun, exciting, listening to him.

I liked Miles too. I had Kind of Blue on a reel to reel tape.

...agreed...really luv that stylistic line that runs thru Fats Navarro, Clifford Brown, Booker Little and which also includes Charles Tolliver, an sadly under-appreciated player who has done some great stuff ( and incidently is a really nice guy who was humble beyond words...was blessed to have had the opportunity to chat with him on several occasions when he was artist-in-residence at a local college's music of school...)...

Chuck Mangione is often slagged off by hardcore boppers. But he can play. After he got out of school in the early '60s he was a Jazz Messenger. That's right, the same seat held by Clifford Brown, Kenny Durham, Lee Morgan and Bill Hardman.
