Moving on from Foobar, Media Center, Squeezebox etc... anything else decent?

I used to use a Modwright Transporter and thus used Squeezebox software and iPeng remote.  I moved to a new DAC and therefore couldn't use Squeeze server anymore.

I use FLAC files so I can't use iTunes.

I tried JRiver but while it has a great PC GUI, the Rivermote is complete crap.

I am now using Foobar2000 but the Foo remote (for iPhone/iPad) is garbage (buggy, buggy, buggy and very limited).

I didn't realize how spoiled I was by iPeng.

Any other options?  I don't want to run to my PC (in another room) just to change music, I need some remote way of controlling it that won't drive me nuts.

Thanks in advance.

Squeezebox Touch into your new DAC??

Hi Madfloyd,
I have in the past used a program called Xlobby.  It has a thin client that works well and is configurable.  See a previous thread here where I described the setup and included pics of the client:

http://www.audiocircle.com/index.php?topic=66874.msg615935#msg615935

Old versions of Xlobby are still free and it has a pretty active users forum.  Some people have put together skins that will include PPC client skins.  It works with Foobar (not certain what revs of foobar work).

Best,
Ed

You can simply go to 127.1.1.0:9000 (I believe that's the right IP - I'm sure port 9000 is correct) and bring up the web interface from your server directly on any web enable device - like an iPhone as long as it's connected to your LAN.

Pardon my ignorance, but I don't understand. Which web interface are you referring to?

datman

I believe he is referring to the web interface command that appears in the programs listing under Squeezecenter.  When you click on this, the web interface for Squeezecenter opens in a browser window.

I have replaced my Transporter with a Touch and am using a Wyred 4 Sound DAC-1.  The only thing Squeezecenter does not do in this situation is switch digital inputs on my dac.  All other functions work exactly as they are supposed to.

If you are used to the Squeezecenter interface, I see no reason to change.  All of the players use the same FLAC codec and sound pretty much the same unless there is something fundamentally wrong with the software.

By the way, the Touch (throujght its coax output) sounds aa least as good as the Transporter if not somewhat better (the dac plays in here).

Unless it's a USB or firewire DAC, I don't understand why (as the others suggest) you don't continue to use a Squeezebox as the transport.

If you want to connect the DAC to your PC and want to use iPeng just install Squeezeplay. It is the successor of Softsqueeze and is under development by the same team as Squeezecentre.

My DAC is USB. Although it has a Spdif input I believe I will get better sound quality going direct from the computer rather than through an intermediate device although I have heard that the spdif output of the new Touch is decent.

OK, I'm very puzzled. I searched for Squeezeplay, but in trying to download it I seem to get just another version of SqueezeBox Server, which of course will not output to anything other than a Logitech device.

What am I missing?

Not my experience, it runs great on my Core2 Duo at 2.2GHz, 4GB DDR and Win7 64. VERY good actually and compared to all the other players, its sounds the best! WAY better then iTunes which is just crap and a GIANT memory hog. The theater display and remote for MediaCenter 15 is awesome!!

I have about 1.4 TB of AIFF's and a Devil Sound DAC. I had a Scott Nixon USBTD prior and I still have an Arcam FMJ CDP. The Devil Sound is F'in amazing!!

The most recent stable version of squeezeplay you will find here:
http://downloads.slimdevices.com/nightly/?ver=7.5

I have only experience with the OSX version.

Thanks, Michiel.  I had stupidly downloaded the wrong software.  I will try this.

The IP address I posted will give you the same screen on your mobile device effectively that you see on your server in the other room.

Michiel,

I have Squeezeplay installed and running. It sees my music library just fine.  However, there doesn't seem to be any sort of setting that allows me to control where it outputs the music.

So it 'plays' music, just doesn't produce any sound.  :-)

Any advice?

Thanks,
Ian

The IP address I had to use was for the SB server from the diagnostics tab, then add the :9000 for the port.  Worked with my iTouch, but the display is to small for me to read easily.

Nevermind, I just had to change the default Windows sound device to be my DAC.
