As part of the continuing search for better digital audio, found a really cheap netbook with an 64bit Intel processor.  Will be loading Win7 64bit version OS on it once WinXP finishes loading.  Will then be able to compare the Win7 32bit to Win7 64bit version OS.  The original netbook can only run Win7 32 bit due to the Atom N270 processor.

Which netbook is this?

The Acer AOD255 needs a single 2GB SODIMM upgrade to run Win7 x64.   Have the memory on order and should be here soon.  Good news was it is on sale at NewEgg for $34.  Netbook + memory was $224!

According to everything I have read Foobar2000 version 1.1.1 and Win7 x64 running WASAPI work correctly.  This should be interesting.

Do you need wasapi with kernel streaming plug in in windows 7?

You only need the WASAPI component for Foobar2000 running Win7.  It is a bit perfect interface like Kernel Streaming.

hi HAl

So you can choose Kernel streaming or wasapi?
Are they SQ wise equal? or is there another reason to prefer one over the other?

Kyrill,
You can install the components in Foobar2000 for both Kernel Streaming and WASAPI on Windows 7.  The software lets you choose which interface to output to a DAC or soundcard.

When I have listened to my setup I prefer the WASAPI interface on Win7.  WinXP did not have WASAPI so Kernel Streaming was better when I was using that OS.

I have no way of checking bit perfect output, but from what I have read, WASAPI is also bit perfect.  It is the bit perfect feature that should make sure you are listening to the recording as made by the studio without any further signal processing.

OK

I don't think there is a SQ difference, the Foobar wiki does not mention it although it -under wasapi- spontaneously compares wasapi with KS, it  says: "USB audio devices typically require low buffer lengths to operate properly. Kernel Streaming is known to work better with such devices.
So if wasapi works with usb audio devices you have extra options which KS lacks, for instance muting other windows sounds   http://wiki.hydrogenaudio.org/index.php?title=Foobar2000:Components_0.9/foo_out_wasapi

I have a setup with Vista 64 bit and Foobar 1.1

Kernel streaming sounds much better on my system.

But every system is different.

Kyrill,
I have been using Win7 Starter x32 and WASAPI with good success.  The next thing to try is Win 7 Home x64 version to see if that works.  That seems to be the OS for the future.  You are correct about WASAPI having more features.  Will be able to install the x64 version once memory arrives and installed.

I do not use short buffer lengths in Foobar2000.  I use nearly 2 seconds.

Will give them both a try under Win7 x64.   :D

Got the Acer memory install completed.  It is not for the faint of heart!  Lots of plastic bending and pc board flexing!   :o   My nephew gave me a hand through the entire process.

After the memory install did the Win7 x64 Home Premium install and that was quirky, but worked.

Have all the software installed, battery charged and ready for a listening session tomorrow.  :thumb:

Well, the netbook sounds really good as a music server running Foobar2000 version 1.1.1 and the WASAPI interface via Win7 x64.

Will try the Kernel Streaming interface this evening as a comparison.

I do get lockups on the netbook, but that should be easy to solve.  Think it is the power saving features getting to happy.  :nono:

HAL,

I ordered an EVO and am waiting for it to arrive. I love using my Hi-Face (BNC) with RF attenuators. I plan on using it with a 9V battery as i have a 9V to Dc 2.1 MM adapter coming. Can you please indicate these A123 batteries and chargers and provide links to where they can be purchased?

Thanks in Advance.
